;.:. JOHN PENNELL of Northwest Louisiana State College pole vaulted 16 feet, 6V4 inches Tuesday at Monroe, La. to set another unoffical world's record. Pennel's vault bettered a mark of 16 feet 5 inches set by Brian Sternberg of the University of Washington in the Penn Relays last week. The officially-recognized world mark is 16 feet, 21i inches. (UPI Telephoto) Canyonville Tigers Rely On Late Rally To Grab Bico-B League Win Over Elkton Camas Valley Oakland 18-6 Camas Valley's Hornets stayed close on the heels of ihe Bico-B League leaders Tuesday by posting their third victory in four confer ence starts. The Hornets displayed their pow er before the home fans, unleash ing a 12h.it attack to clobber the invading Oakland Oakers 18-6. Lost To Tigtr In league play the lone loss suf fered by the Hornets has been at the hands of the undefeated Can yonville Tigers. Oakland now has a 0-5 record. The invaders held the lead Tues day for one inning, scoring three runs in the top of the first. How ever, the Hornets came on strong with two in the first .and four in the second to move out in front. Camas Valley clinched the victory with a nine-run explosion in the fourth. Oakland's opening rally started when Mike Williamson and Larry Sorenson worked their way for bases on balls. Jon Stroop followed with a triple, then came home on a throwing error. Four Run Outburst Camas Valley moved into the lead in the second with a four run outburst. Don Lawson started the fire with a single and Ron Randall was safe on an error. An unsuc cessful fielder's choice on Jim Ri ser's grounder loaded the sacks. Terry Buel walked to force the first run across and Terry Volk man sacrificed Randall home. An Hornets Top In Loop Tilt error on Priest's rap allowed two more runs to score. In the wild fnnrlh inninir Vnllr. man and Priest led off with sin gles. Robert Parret was safe on a fielder's choice before Richard un corked a double to clear the bases. Four more walks and another er ror, followed by Priest's second bingle of the trame accounted for the nine runs. Priest and Steve Looney com bined talents to toss the win for the Hornets. The two hurlers lim ited the Oakers to three hits, with the big blow being Stroop's first inning triple. The Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the sixth frame to post an 8-6 triumph over the invading Elkton Elks. The win gives Can yonville a one-half game lead over the Yoncalla Eagles. The Tigers are now 4 0 and Yoncalla is 3 0. Elkton has a 0-4 record. Elkton surprised the host Tigers by building a 2 0 lead with single tallies in the second and third in nings. However, the Tigers scored six to take the lead in the bottom of the third. Canyonville's six-run explosion was started on an error and a walk which put Brent Parsley and Terry Soeteber on base. Steve Gardner followed with a single and John Ringen was safe on an error. Don Long forced Ringen at second be Jore Jim Sherman slashed a two run triple. Sherman scored when Bud Olsen was safe on a bobble, and Olsen came around on two stolen bases and a passed ball. The Elks fought back to tie the game at G all with four runs in the fifth. John Levenhagen singled and David Abraham was safe on an error. Williams followed with a base blow to set the scene for three consecutive walks. The winning tallies for Canyon ville crossed the plate in the sixth. Soeteber was safe on an error and Gardner walked. Both runners ad vanced on a ground out and Don Long singled to drive in both runs. At the plate Don Long was 2-4 for the Tigers and Levenhagen was 2-5 for Elkton. Brent and Ron Par sley, along with Olsen, handled the mound duties for the winners, giv ing up five hits. However, some sloppy fielding anu a lot of walks kept the pitchers for both teams in constant hot water. Friday the Elks will be idle, while Canyonville will travel to Oakland. Today the Tigers have a night game scheduled for Glendale and will host the Glide Wildcats Thursday. Parsley (4), Olsen (6) and Ringen. , Oakland Athletes To Be Honored At Lettermen's Banquet Monday All varsity Oakland athletes will be honored at the annual Letter men's Awards Banquet to be held Monday, May 6, at the Legion Hall in Oakland. The banquet, sponsored by the Lions Club, will begin at 7 p.m. for all lettermen and their fathers. Guest speaker for the affair will be Bill Willard, head football coach of the Monroe Blue Devils. Wil lard guided the Blue Devils to the 1962 B 11-man championship, with one of the toughest games en route to the tate crown being against the Oakers in league play. Highlighting the evening will be the presentation of trophies to the outstanding athlete in each sport and the announcement of the win ner of the Athlete of the Year award. Worley, Magrisi Stage Duel In Glendale-Days Creek Tilt V4 3 6V4 Glendalc's Darrell Worley and Days Creek's Ken Magrisi staged an individual duel as they set the pace for their teams in a dual track meet Tuesday at Glendale. Magrisi was the top individual winner of the meet with four firsts, but the Wolves finished second to the host Pirates in the team scor ing by a 70-56 count. Magrisi won the shot put, discus, javelin and. 100-yard dash for tho Wolves. In addition he finished sec ond in the 220-yard dash. Threi Victor!! Worley paced the Pirates with three victories on his own, and combined with his teammates to run as anchor man on the winning mile and 880 relay teams. Worley captured the 440-yard run in :52.5, ran a :23.8 220 and won the high jump with a leap of 5-4. Other winners for the Pirates in cluded Larry Robison in the high hurdles and 880, Daryl Close in the mile, and the mile and 880 relay quartets. Terry Richardson won the broad jump, Alan Helvey the pole vault and Dennis Nixon the low hurdles to give the Wolves seven firsts Glendale captured eight first place awards. Run Comm In Sixth Cool locked horns with Oak ridge's Dick Kocer, and the flashy southpaw's teammates provided him with a single run in the sixth frame as Drain posted a 1-0 Emer ald League triumph. In working tho full seven innings, Cool struck out 16 batters and is sued five walks. The talented sen ior had his curves breaking and his fast ball blazing as he put a stopper to Oukridge's league win ning streak. On the other hand, hocer lanncci six Drain batters and was charged with four bases on bulls. The visit ing Warriors managed to collect four hits off the loo-pound sopno moro chuckcr, Blomberg Provides Power Drain pushed across its winning run in tho top of the sixth inning. Mike Blomberg provided the pow er when he teed off for a double as lead-off batter. A deep foul down the right field lino allowed Blomberg to tag up after the catch and race to third. Two pitches la ter he scampered home on a wild pitch. Tuesday's three-hitter by Cuol came on the heels of a no-no per formance by Drain sophomore Jer ry Smith Monday against the Cen tral Unn Cobras. Cool's victory gives the Warriors a 3-1 league record as they trail the leading McKenzie Eagles by a game and a half. McKcnzic sports a 5 0 record, ,ind holds the lone win over Drain. Frosh May Play Roseburg Today The Roseburg Indians traveled to the wrong part of the slate Tues day for a tennis match going to Eugene to face the University of Oregon Frosh. Just when the matches were get ting ready to start the rains came and drove the netlers inside. When the rain did not show any signs of letting up the Tribe crew returned home where things were dry enough for a practice session. Coach Al Hoffman reports that there is a possibility tho Frosh may come to Roseburg today to clash with the Indians. The next regu larly scheduled action for the In dians is Saturday when they host Seattle, the District 5 tournament. Wichita Riddle's Irish jumped back to the lead in the Umpqua Valley League baseball race Tuesday when it was announced that the Douglas Tro jans were forfeiting a pair of games to the defending champ ions. Tho UVL douhlehcader between the two was rained out earlier in the season, and Douglas forfeited after not being ready to play a make-up Monday. The two wins gives Riddle a 4.0 record and puis the Irish in a vir tual tie for the conference lead with the Myrtle Creek Vikings who sport a 5-1 record. Saturday Riddle will face the Vi kings at Myrllo Creek in a pair of crucial league counters.
