Winetrout Motors Scores 9-6 Win Evening its Doug-Lane League record at 2-2, Winetrout Motors Le gion crew of Myrtle Creek down ed South Eugene, 9-6, Tuesday on the victor's lield. Ron Weakley threw the first four innings for the Winetrout Mo tors team, giving up four runs on eight hits, while striking out one and walking one. Rojclio Gutier rez gave up two runs in the last five innings, while striking out three and walking ono. In pitch ing the last five frames Gutierrez got the win. Don Fisher led Winetrout in the hitting department with a single, a double and a home run in five times at bat. Winetrout's first two runs came via home runs, as Fisher con nected for a round-tripper in the first and Weak cv one in tne inirn Myrtle Creek scored two runs in both the lourin ana me mm frames. Stafford's Spree Ended By Tigers NEW YORK (AP) - Bill Staf ford's string of 25 scoreless in nings has been broken but the New York Yankee right-hander couldn't care less. , "I didn't even know I had it," Stafford said jn the clubhouse Tuesday night, still elated after a 2-1 victory over Frank Lary and the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers finally broke through with a run after two were out in the ninth. The thing that Stafford was most pleased about was the fact that he didn't walk anybody. Yankee press box statisticians said he hadn't walked anybody in the last 33 innings. "If I walk over 85 men in a season I think I have had a bad year," he said. "If you look it up, you'll find I walked exactly 100 In 406 innings, counting a few months in Richmond and three years with the Yanks." Stafford, only 23, appears to be headed for his top year in the majors with a 8-3 record. In the last four starts lie has allowed a total of only 20 hits and seven runs. Padres Clobber Bees To Narrow PCL Title Race PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS With one eye on the Pacific Coast League lead, San Diego's Padres blanked first-place Salt Lake City 7-0 Tuesday night and climbed within one game of the PCL lead. It's the closest the Padres have been all season. John Briggs. hurling a nifty six- hitter, racked up his second win over the Bees. He had plenty of help from his teammates, though, as they rattled three Salt Lake pitchers for eight hits. In other games, third place Seattle stayed two games out despite their 6-3 loss to Portland. The Beavers employed slugging by Bill Kern and excellent relief pitching by Dan Osinski for the win. Kern drove in five runs. Rounding out league games, the Tacoma Giants backed up John Goctz' steady mound performance with a 10-hit attack, downing Van couver Mountics, 5-2. And Spokane's Indians, playing before their smallest crowd in five years, 535 persons, hung a 7-1 defeat on Hawan s Islanders. The Indians used a combination of clutch hitting and Howie Reed's razor-sharp six-hit pitching for the win. But the PCL spotlight was on San Diego. Harry Anderson bol stered Briggs' efficient mound performance with his sixth home run. blasting one over the center- field wall at the 400-foot mark in the fourth inning. The Padres' Tom Harper, Bob Klaus and Har ry Anderson each had two hits apiece for the winners. Petersen Replaces Glaze On Metro '9' EUGENE (AP)-Pilchcr Wayne Petersen of Cleveland and first baseman Jim Goodwin of Hlllsboro have been added to the Metro ros ter for this weekend's prep all-star baseball scries. It completes the 18-man team that meets State in the 15th annual series at Bethel Park in Eugene Saturday night and Sunday. Petersen replaces Wcndall Glaze of Hlllsboro who signed a profes sional baseball contract with Pitts burgh. The win was Shoemaker's 1,000th at Hollywood Park, and makes him the first jockey to win 1,000 on a single track. Shoemaker's all-time victory total is ot 4,337. Entry HOYLAKE, England (UPI) David (Spec) Goldman and Bob Sweeny, a pair of aging but able golfers, were among 13 American survivors who moved out for sec ond and third round matches to day in the British Amateur cham pionship. Goldman, a 53-year-old business man from Dallas, Tex., who was the runner - up in last week's French Amateur, faced England's R. E. Rimmer while Sweeny, a 50-year-old New Yorker who won this tournament in 1937, met Irishman John Glover in second round matches. Mike Sanger of Bedford. N.Y, drew the toughest second round opponent among the Yanks. He was pitted against British Rvder Cupper Mike Lunt. Former Wim bledon tennis champion Bob Fal kenburg, a California native who now resides in Brazil, played Dr. C. C. Bird of Scotland. The Los Angeles Dodgers may still be suffering from the shock of fiat Braves' barrage. Halting the tailspin in which they dropped out of the National League lead, the Giants snapped their six-game losing streak Tues day night, sweeping a double header from Cincinnati 2-1 and 7-5 and moving back within a game of the first-place Dodgers. The Dodgers, rolling with seven victories in nine games and 20 in 24, ran into a 17-hit, five-homer Milwaukee outburst behind Lew Burdette's six-hit pitching and lost a game and a half of their lead with a 15-2 clobbering by the Braves. The defending champion Reds fell from third place to fifth. Pitts burgh moved inlo third, 7V4 be hind, by edging the Chicago Cubs 4-3 and St. Louis nipped Phila delphia 3 2 to take over fourth. Juan Marichal (9-4) checked the Reds on seven hits in the opener and drove in the winning run in a two-run seventh inning surge that put it away for the Giants. Mari chal clinched it with a single off Jim O'Toole (4-7) after J i m Davenport tripled, Ed Bailey hit a sacrifice fly and Jose Pagan stroked a double. The Reds scored their run in the fourth on a homer by Gordy Coleman.
