Visitor Honored Honored at i surprise birthday observance Wednesday was Mrs. Ernest Gent who is visiting at the home of her son-in-law and daugh ter. Mr. and Mrs. Walter W. Whit ford, on the South Umpqua Road northeast of Tiller. Arrangements of lilacs and dog wood and other spring flowers add ed an attractive decorative touch to the Whitford home for the oc casion. Following an afternoon of visiting, Mrs. Whitford served re freshments to Mrs. ira a. rooie, Mrs. John F. Donovan, Mrs. Em mitt Belcher. Mrs. Anton Erie- bach, Mrs. John 0. Wilson, Mrs, . Milton H. Hommersly and the hon or guest. Mrs. Gent arrived recently from Redwood City. Calif., for an ex tended visit with the Whitfords, who moved to Tiller last fall from Iowa and purchased the former Hartley place. Mrs. uent lormer ly resided in Illinois and came to California after the death of her husband. Riverside Club Is Entertained Mrs. Darwin Lee was a charm mlng hosteBS Wednesday evening when she entertained members of the Rlvcrsdole MNO Club at her home. A white elephant exchange was enjoyed. Whitford and her mother, Mrs. Ernest Gent; Mrs. Anton Erlehach and Mrs. Emmitt Belch er. A lovely birthday cake had been made for the occasion by Mrs Belcher. Mrs. Erlcbach assisted with serving refreshments. An ar rangement of iris, peonies and olh er spring flowers from Mrs. Whit- ford's garden added a decorative touch for the event. Glendale Bethel Elects Monday The Glendale Bethel of Jobs Daughters elected new officers Monday evening as follows: Nancy Clare, honored queen; elect; Carol Major, senior prin cess: Betty Staplcton, Junior prin cess, Jennio Hughes, Wolf Creek, guide: and Cheryl Miller, marshal The new officers will be installed in June, along with appointive of ficers. The guardian and associate guardian, Lt. Cmdr, (ret.) and Mrs. Tim McKrrnan, announced that they will not accept their of fices for the coming year. Refreshments were served to members of the bethel and to a number of Masons and Eastern Star members. Potluck Enjoyed At D. I Lovely Luncheon Given Saturday The home of Mrs. Neil Christian in Riversdale was the scene for a lovely luncheon for members and their mothers of Xi Omicron, Beta bigma Phi, on Saturday. The committee in charge of the lunch eon were Mrs. Christian, Mrs. R. L. Wiley, Airs. Craig Short and Mrs. W. George Krueger. J'ne 12:30 p.m. luncheon was served buffet style from a table covered with a white cloth and centered by an arrangement of snowballs and scarlet hawthorne, flanked by white candles. (Fox Photo) Outdoor Circus Presented By Youngsters At Winston A special tribute for mothers was shown by several Winston youngsters Saturday afternoon when they entertained for them at an out-of-door circus on the lawn of Dr. and Airs. H. L. VanDer mark in Winston. The acts, produced and directed by the group of youngsters, consist ed of a boxing match between Kd- die and Teddy Grcnsky with Don ald Rigney as the clown referee Steve and Karen Van Permark as the doctor and nurse attending the fighters; and a demonstration of a reducing machine with Steven and David Van Dermatk participating CV Grange Men Are Hosts At Mother's Day Dinner On Sunday evening, men of the Camas Valley Grango honored the women at a Mother s Day dinner. Ernest Booth had cooked the de licious ham dinner and was assist ed by the other granue men. Guy Alocro and ilujsel llarwood had mane me canes, limner was served to 32 adults and S children. ! After dinner there were several musical numbers by trnie Booth of Camas, Jay Barret from Olalla and Airs. Alildred Secoy from Mel rose. Interesting cultural programs - , .-.. i m ENGAGED Mr. and Mrs. Roy Cox, Yoncalla, onnounce the engagement of their daughter, Jeanette, to Dale McLeod, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack McLeod, Drain. The bride-elect was graduated from Yoncalla High School and Springfield College of beauty and is now a beautician at Arthur's Riviera Solon on River Road, Eugene. A fall wedding is planned. and Donald Rigney as master of ceremonies. A graceful acrobatic and bar act was presented by Su san Rigney and Karen VanDer mark in ballerina costume. David VanDcrniark, the Jack in-the box, was assisted by the clown. Don ald Rigney, and Steven VanDcr mark as the music box man. Last but not least was the giant. Roger Carr and David C.rensky. joined by the entire cast in doing the "twist," providing an amusing and enjoyable afternoon. The concession stand was run by Tommy and Dennis Carr. Duplicate Play Held Thursday The Umpqua Duplicate Bridee Club met Thursday evening at the home of Air. and Mrs. Duane Holes. Mr. and Airs. C. R. Lois Krug gave the inspirational thought. Clara Rockwell, as topic mistress, asked each memDer to talk for about one and one half minutes on "Aly Dream Island." Toastmistress Alildred Dunn intro duced Alice Larson who gave a talk on Japan, and Lois Krug who reported on the regional meeting at Coos Bay. Clara Rockwell was critic and Alice Larson was evalu- ator. Decorations were in keeping with the theme of. the evening. Ruth Bradley served delicious re freshments. The closing thought was given by Wanda Commons. Banquet Given At Church A mothers and daughters banquet was held at the Pine Grove Church last Friday evening. Mrs. Freta Karcher was in charge of the in teresting program that followed the chicken dinner, aiusicai selec tions were presented by Grace and Gayle Smith. A monologue by Grace Ruhn and readings by Alora Ruhn and Airs. Alary Eastman completed the program. Kenya Safari Club owned by William Hol den, another famous motion pic ture actor. in Leather Oakland Bethel Daughters Honored By Eastern Star Members of Oakland Bethel 42, International Order of Jobs Daugh ters, were honored Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Oakland Alasonic Temple at a potluck dinner given in their honor by members of East ern Star Chapter 91, Oakland. The secret mother of each Job's Daughter, was revealed at the din ner when an Eastern Star mem ber was seated at the right of each girl. Names of girls were drawn at the beginning of the Eastern Star year. Names of secret mothers were not revealed until the din ner. Escorted and introduced were Kathryn Roadman, member of The Pay of Representatives Committee of The Grand Chapter of Oregon; and Air. and Airs. Bennie Knyp stra, worthy patron and matron of Elkton Chapter 143. Reports of visitations were giv en by several members. In honor of Alother's Day, Doro thy Austin read poems, "Nobody Knows But Alother" and "The Watcher." After the meeting, in recognition of Mother's and Father's Night, the chapter was entertained by Airs. Joe Payne and two of her piano pupils, Peggy Jo Edson and Carol Major.
