OUTDOOR EATING -THE 1 FAMILY'S FAVORITE MEAL &y Fri. July 21, 1961 The Newi-Reyiew, Roscburg Ore. 7 By Janet M. Janis, Food Editor National Dairy Council Outdoor eating, whether in the backyard, at the beach or in a country setting, nas oecome as traditionally American as the grilled cheeseburgers tnat are served. Who can resist the rich aromas Irom the outdoor grill or the carefree spirit of a picnic? And who would want to for family and friends can have the happiest of times together. Getting down to the very basic Question of what to serve you Just can t go wrong wun juicy grilled cheeseburgers done just the wny each "picnic gourmet" likes. Before grilling, brush the meat with Barbecue Spread, a nippy blend of butter, herbs and apices, to create really new taste sensation. Unbeatable Combination Slices of Cheddar cheese, as mild or sharp as preferred, are placed over the "burger" just before It is done and adds an un beatable flavor and nourishment. Buttered hamburger buns placed in a homemade foil pan can sit on the back of the grill to heat while the meat is cooked for these favorite-of-all picnic sandwiches. A cheeseburger is never com plete without lots of relishes such as sliced tomatoes, onion rings, pickles, olives and lettuce. You can take it from here in completing the picnic menu ac cording to your family's taste. Cheese and Bean Skillet, potato salad, cole slaw or bubbly maca roni and cheese kept hot on the grill are a few suggestions. What ever you do don't forget plenty of ice cold milk for everyone. Here are the recipes for the nippy Barbecue Spread and tasty Cheese and Bean Skillet. The Barbecue Spread is equally as good as barbecued spareribs, hot dogs, chicken and steak. And the cheese and bean combination can be prepared in a skillet right on the grill. BARBECUE SPREAD '4 cup (1 stick) soft butter 'A teaspoon salt V teaspoon paprika y teaspoon chili powder teaspoon cayenne lA teaspoon mustard V4 teaspoon garlic salt 1 tablespoon catsup Dash of tabasco 2 tablespoons minced green onions Blend ingredients together. Spread on hamburgers, ribs, chicken, hot dogs or cubed steaks. Makes Vi cup spread. KEEP YOUR PICNIC WITH PICTURES Plenty of good food to eat. plenty of fun and laughter and a camera to capture it all . . . that's the recipe for a picnic. The best souvenirs of the day's outing are snapshots, color slides or home movies of all the things that went on at the picnic site. But to set a real record of it, a picture record you'll enjoy look ing over in future years, don't just take snapshots aimlessly. Try to plan ahead to capture the highlights. And the best place to Degin is at the beginning. That means taking pictures of the picnic luncn being prepared and packed, the scramble to get in the family car and perhaps some shots of Mom trying to tell Junior that it's okay to take his baseball bat, sailboat, model plane and toy nhe but tli ere isn't enough room left in the car to take his complete collection of toy soldiers. Get Dad Cooking Once arrived at the picnic site, you can continue the picture story with shots of Dad as he cooks the frankfurters or Mom serving up a plate of food to waiting mem bers of the family. You'll want to take some snaps of the small fry munching away on a giant-size slice of watermelon or taking a mighty drink of soda pop. Most people are conscious of thttmselves when they know a camera is being aimed at them. PATRONIZE NEWREVIEW ADVERTISERS (Let's E-hve A Picnic!
