Back row: Piano Students Present Recital A very interesting piajio recital was given by pupils o Miss Gladys Strong on Tuesday evening, May 26th. The program was presented very largely by boys. The group consisted o young beginners, ele mentary, .and advanced students. They were a talented group and showed real musicianship being well developed according to their level of advancement. The recital was given at Miss Strong's residence studio on South Main Street. The families and friends of the pupils who played were invited. A social hour was enjoyed and refreshments served after the program. The following students t played: Garden Valley Lass Complimented Monday Linda Kinsel was honored at a surprise birthday party Monday after school. Guests arrived at 'he Garden Valley home of Mrs. Carl Arola by school bus. Co-hostess was the honored guest's mother, Mrs. Leonard Kin sel. Suitable games were played and Linda opened her gifts before the dinner hour. Sharing in the happy occasion were the guest of honor and her was hostess at her home Wednes sister. Guests spent the night at the Arola home. Skating Party Given As Going-AwaV Affair The seventh grade of Elkton School gave the annual going-away skating party for the eighth grade last week. Anniversary Noted Mr. and Mrs. Ross Hutchinson of Roseburg were honored at their 60th wedding anniversary Sunday at the Kellogg Grange Hall. About 150 friends and relatives were pres ent. A potluck luncheon was serv ed at 1:30 p.m. Following the dinner a short pro gram was enjoyed. Mrs. Floyd Mc Michael of Curtin played her gui tar and sang several numbers, fol lowed by a comedy skit by Edith Gates and Pat Anderson. Mable Rader then read a history reading of the honored couple. Recent Bridal Shower Held To Honor Miss Sharon Brown Miss Sharen Brown was the re cipient of many lovely and useful gifts at a recent bridal shower held for her at the home of Mrs. L. D. Long on Carnes Road. Mrs. Maxine Parker and Mrs. Merle Lil ienthal were co-hostesses. The rooms of. the Long home were beautifully decorated with spring flowers in profusion, and the traditional white wedding bells were suspended over the gift table. The evening was spent in playing appropriate games, with prizes be ing received by Miss Diane Stoffel, Mrs. Jack Trent, Mrs. Helen Brown and Mrs. S. L. Lindberg. Miss Sharon Means assisted the honoree in the opening of her gifts, after which the hostesses served the dainty refreshments. Those attending were Nina Wal ter, Sharon Means, Gay Van Horn, Garden Valley Home Is Scene Of Farewell Party Mr. and Mrs. Clem Schneider of Garden Valley honored Mr. and Mrs. Felix Raddatz at a surprise farewell party Saturday evening. The host and hostess served a G:30 chow mein dinner to Mr. and Mrs. Raddatz, Mr, and Mrs. Rob ert Matthews, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Carlson, Major and Mrs. Robert Millar, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hig bee and Marvin Schneider. Dinner was served buffet style. Games were played in the eve ning hours. The group gave a red rhododendron to the Raddatzcs for their new home. Two Blue Bird Groups Present Special Program Members of the Glendale Blue Bird groups, the Bluebells, under the leadership of Mrs. Joan Mehl and Mrs. Frances Price; and the Bluejavs, under the leadership of Mrs. Floyd Taylor, Mrs. Elbert Meyers and Mrs. Rodney Swan' son. honored their mothers at i special program held on Sunday afternoon. May 17, at the Glendale Masonic Temple. The nrnffrnm beean with the girls marching in singing, "Sing, Blue Bird, Sing." They then recited the Blue Bird Wish The Bluebells did a graceful maypole dance with a maypole wound with blue and white crepe paper streamers. Members of the Bluejays panto mimed nursery rhymes. They also sang and acted out "Clementine," with Pat Stapleton and Peggo Jo Edson taking the parts of Clemen tine and the Miner. The skits were followed by the singing of a song, "Mother," in honor of the many mothers who were present. The program was concluded by a promotion service in which several Blue Birds were advanced to the Camp I ire rank. OES. held its regular meeting Thursday, with Nell Cooper, worthy matron, and Leland Bloom, worthy patron, pre siding. Kindergarten Has Spring Program Members of the Helen Saar Kin dergarten presented a spring pro gram Friday entitled, "Jumbo Hunts for Spring." Mothers and guests were Invited and a large group attended each program. Children participating in the morning program were Connie An drews, Mike Bean, Phil Bean, Dav id Black, Janet Brickey, Julie Cone, Billy Cooke, Dennis Dalman, Katie Davenport, Jimmy Dixon, Deanne DuFresne. Jeff Christenscn was unable to participate in the program but received his diploma as did other class members. The diplomas were presented to both of the classes at their grad uation party from 9 to 11 a.m. to day. Each child received a report of progress and a class picture. Each class presented a short pro gram. Moving pictures were en joyed by the group. Harvy Cockerams Host Card Party Saturday Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Cockeram of Yoncalla were hosts at a card party held at the Rice Valley Community Hall Saturday eve ning. A potluck supper was enjoyed followed by an evening playing five hundred. Conrad Baker and Mrs. Bertha Stock carried off the sweep prizes. John Bacon and Mrs. Fred Lee won high score and Le roy Churchill and Mrs, Ella Sparks, low score. Thirty friends were present. Miss Woodside Hostess ' Miss Kathy Woodside entertained members of the Yoncalla BPW at her home Monday evening. Re ports of the convention held in Medford over the weekend were given. Garden Club Fetes Mrs. Gilbreath The Glendale Federated Garden Club honored Mrs. Ruby Gilbreath at a farewell potluck dinner and handkerchiof shower held at the Glendale Masonic Temple Tuesday at 1 p.m. The room was beautifully decor ated in the centennial theme. Ta ble mats and napkins bore centen nial motifs. A large bouquet of old fashionsd flowers arranged In an old-fashioned tea pot, and old-fashioned oil lamps were used on the table. Dutch iris and mixed spring flowers were used at Uie ends of the table. The gift table was covered with a hand-made lace cloth. Miniature pink- roses in a blue hobnail vase made a dainty centerpiece. Mrs. Gilbreath, whose husband is retiring after six years as prin cipal of the Glendale Elementary School, was instrumental in the or ganizing of the club in November of 1954 and served as us nrsi presi dent. She has honored the Glen dale Club by giving demonstra- t ons in driftwood and liower ar rangements in many clubs of the S skivou and umpqua aisuicis, She served as District Horticulture Chairman in 1956. 1957 and 1958. She worked on the State Awards Committee in 1956 and 1957 and is now serving on the District Awards Committee. When school is out, the Gil- breaths will return to their home near Camas, Wash. Bridal Shower Is Held Wednesday Miss Nancy Smith, who makes her home with her aunt, Mrs. Howard Hutto, near Glendale, was honored at a bridal shower given by Miss Judy Furlong and Miss Janie Munyon, Wednesday eve ning. The hostesses will be brides maids at Miss Smith's wedding which will be held In Glendale June 27. The house was decorated with white wedding bells suspended from an archway. The gift table was decorated in whito and pink. Four beautifully decorated white cakes were served. The table had a lovely center piece of snowballs, roses, snap dragons and coral belts. Covers were set for Mrs. Gustie Noycs, Mrs. Phil Hart, Mrs. Agnes Waer, Mrs. R. D. Parsons, Mrs. George Frew. Mrs. M. L. fcory, Miss Bernardine Princen and Mrs. William Stiewig. A short meeting was conducted by the president. Mrs. Waer, then games were enjoyed. Mrs. Waer won the orize for the baby pic ture contest. Mrs. Hart won the high prize and Mrs. Noyes won the extra prize for the afternoon, A delicious birthday cake was cut by Mrs. George Frew. A gift from the club was also presented to her. . Banquet Held Thursday A banquet honoring elementary school pupils who won awards was held at Lincoln Junior High School Thursday evening. Mildred Senior Girls Are Honored'By Bethel The senior girls of Roseburg High School were honored at "Senior Night" by Bethel 8, International Order of Job's Daughters, Honored Queen Sharon Lyons welcomed the girls and introduced Mrs. George Riggs, the guest speaker of the evening, Mrs. Riggs, a former member of Job's Daugh ters, was graduated from Oregon State College and is a member of the local association of AATJW. Mrs. Riggs amused her audience with her humor in a talk entitled 'What to Expect From College" Following the meeting, refresh ments were served in the Masonic dining room. Arrangements were in charge of Patty Dent. By special dispensation of the grand guardian, the dato of the next meeting has been changed to Monday, June 8, at 7:30, Instal lation of officers will be held Satur day evening, June 13, Juniors, Seniors Honored Saturday The Junior-senior banquet held at the Elkton High School Satur day was enjoyed by the junior and senior class and their guests and faculty members. A ham dinner was served by tho junior moth ers with the freshman class serv ing tables. During the program, the welcome was given by David Comoton. iun- lor president, followed by tho re sponse by Joe Whitlow. The class prophecy was read by Bud Bishop followed by a piarto solo by Lois carnes. Joe Whitlow read the class will. The motif of the banquet and prom was Hawaiian. The tables were appropriately decorated. The evening was spent dancing to the Wayne Wagner orchestra frm Roseburg. The gymnasium was also decorated in the Hawaiian theme. Men Of Azalea Grange Honor Women Members Men of the Azalea Grange hon ored the women at the regular so cial meeting recently at a pancake supper. Tho dining room tables were decorated with lilacs and pan- sics. Miss Ardith Meyers presented three sets of dancing by her young people's square dancing class as the main program afterward. The men served ice cream to the young people and their parents after their part of the program. During the evening, a contest was held to find the mother of the evening, and the title was awarded to Mrs. Cecil Wcnderoth. A corsage was presented to her. Informal Dinner Party Hosted By Schneiders Mr. and Mrs, Clem Schneider and Marvin Schneider were hosts Tuesday evening to a group from the Rivcrsdale Grange. Dinner was served at 6:30 to Mr. and Mrs. Darley Ware, Romio ware, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Myers, Miss Nclda Norris and the host and hostess. Tiny baby dolls were hung from a baby tree, along withi pink and blue flowers and pastel-t, colored miniature bells. Storks wore used on one table and alsoi on top of a three-layer cocoanut covered white cake. Another cake was topped with a tiny doll wear-i Ing a full skirt and a gold paper crown. Hostesses served lovely refresh ments. A dinner was served at noon, with Mrs. Frankio Moore and Mrs. Vera Bacon as co-hostesses. The long table was center ed with bowls of roses and Iris. A quilt for welfare was made dur ing the day.
