"Compassion, Comrades, We Bury the Book Not Pasternak" -James Marlow- WlJL 1 ROLE OF THE WASTEBASKET By George Castillo The massive, wastebasket ii a newspaper' most used So manv people look at a newspaper and think that be cause it carries 14 or 16 paces, a day, it has unlimited space. But few of them would believe the volume of written words and pictures which deluges a newspaper every day, much of which hits the well-used wastebasket. It comes in every form, printed, duplicated, mimeo graphed, handwritten or typewritten. Sometimes, it ap pears that all humanity Is devotinu its time to the eafter pursuit of "getting something in the newspaper. Actuallv. it is necessary to set high standards on the material to'be used in order to (five the reader a fair pic ture of what is going on in the world, nation and commun ity. F.verv one of the thousands of words which appear in .'rlailv newsnaner are matched by a thousand others which make it no farther than the wastebasket. . , .
