If lower rates are allowed, he said, the greater convenience and lower unloading costs involved in truck usage would' be overcome. With newer rates, Arthur added, three - of Weyerhaeuser's four large Oregon mills could increase California shipments. The proposed freight reduction, submitted to the ICC by Sl May 20. is mainly opposed by Northern California mills who say it would be inequitable. SP freight rate manager Ed Larson said the lower rate would permit Oregon firms to better compete with California mills and railroads to belter compete with truckers for lumber shipping busi ! ness.
