Williams Real Estate Improved Fire Alarm Reporting System In Use An improved fire alarm report ing system is now in operation in the Winston-Dillard area, accord ing to D. E. Lafferty, Pacific Telephone and Telegraph manager in Roseburg. The new system replaces one for merly in use which caused the siren summoning volunteers to be automatically activated whenever the fire alarm number was dialed. The new alarm is expected to cut down the number of false alarms caused by mistakes in dial ing or caused by accidental shorts on the line, Lafferty said. Here's how the new fire system works: There ae fire alarm phones located In the Fire Hall and in the homes of Chief Milton Nealey, Vcrn Bratsch, John Johnson and Clyde Hastings. A fire alarm call to OSborne 9-8414 can be answered from any of the five telephones. The other four phones can listen in and get the location, tf the fire call re quires a general call for volun teers, the siren can be sounded by flipping a key at any one of the five telephones. Lafferty said the Winston-Dillard fire alarm system Is one of the newest available to communities under protection of volunteer fire departments. 1958 Cranberry Crop To Be Above Last Years WASHINGTON (AP)-The Agri culture Department Tuesday fore cast production of the 1958 crop of cranberries at 1,076,500 barrels bused on conditions as of Aug. 15 the largest since 1953. A crop of that size would be 2 per cent above last year s proauo tion and 13 per cent above aver age. 'I'll a report said that Massachu setts, New Jersey and Wisconsin expect to produce more cranber ries that last year but that Wash ington and Oregon will nave lewer cranberries. The department made this fore east for the fivo major producing Massachusetts 570,000 barrels; New Jersey 88,000; Wisconsin 335,000; Washington 49,500; Ore gon 34,000. CONTINUES PERMIT WASHINGTON (AP) The Sen ate passed legislation this week to continue until 1961 the permission granted U. S. farmers to recruit Mexican workers. Approval by voice vote sent tho measure to President Eisenhower. The House passed it last week after proponents said the Mexi can farm labor program furnishes needed workers. MASS BURIAL . GALWAY, Ireland (AP) Twon- ly-five victims of a uutcn airliner crash in the Atlantic were buried in a mass grave Monday overlook ing Galway Bay. They were the dead whose names are not known. In all, 99 persons perished. The crash dead were buried aft er an interdenominational service. Olson of t h a Faith Lutheran Church, Linda Car ter, George Arula and Kddic lxir enzen left Sunday for Pacific Luth eran College in Tacoma, Wash. They will spend a week at leader ship training school. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Towl and aons, Koy, Italph and Kenneth, arc in Koseburg as houscguests of Mrs. Towl's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Cnmphell. Mr. Towl is a member of tho faculty of Harvard University. Mrs. Edwin Myers and daugh ter, Miss Dinne, left for French l ick, Ind., Thursday, where the latter will be the Moonlight Girl at the National l'hl Sigma Kappa convention. They plan to spend a couple of days in Chicago before returning here. Mr. and Mrs. George Hinsdale have relumed here, following a trip to Vancouver, Wash., to attend the wedding of their niece, Nancy Corkrlrean, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Curkelraai, formerly of this city, and William Keglcy. Both Nancy and Hill will teach this coming school year at Colville, Wash. Oicir E. Joelton, well-known Eu gene contractor, died of a heart attack in Myrtle Point Monday. Funeral services wero held today at the Poolc-Larsen Funeral Home in Kugene. Interment followed in the Lano Memorial Gardens there. Joelson is survived by brothers John and Charles of Roseburg and Arthur of Brookings. Mr. end Mrs. Burton Randall and Ihe lattor's mother, Mrs. Adah linowlsnd, of this city went to Ku gene Sunday for the Stadclman Glass wedding. The Kendall's daughter, Mrs. Unite Brenn, was a bridesmaid at the wedding and Mr. Brenn waa an usher. Both Mr. Stadelinan and Mary Lou Glos'i were in the wedding parly nf Mr. and Mrs. Brenn here in June. Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Brenn spent . (lie last week vacationing in Idaho visiting relatives and friends and then came to Hnsrhurg to visit Ihe latter'! parents, Mr. and Mrs. Burton Randall. They have now moved to llillyard apartments in Kugene to make their home. Mr. Brenn will begin his duties as as anlant Dean of Won at University of Oregon Sept. 1. Mrs. Brenn is the former Lucinda Kandall of this city.
