He receiv ed his basic training at F'ort Ord. Calif, and then had eight weeks training at Fort Gordon. Ga. and was later transferred to F' o r t Lawton, Wash. Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Ogle and Mr. and Mrs. Dirk Harding and son, Mike, left this morning for Portland to attend the funeral of their 13 year-old nephew, Donald Keith Harding, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Harding of Portland, who was drowned in the South Ump qua River in Roseburg Saturday. The Roseburgers were joined in Springfield by Mrs. Ogle's and Mr. Harding's sister. Mrs. Thomas Massry (the former Walda Hard ing of this city), who accompanied them to Portland for the funeral services. Chotnick, formerly Berniece Craw ford Bates, at one time owned and operated a ladies dress shop in Roseburg. Before marrying Mr. Chotnick she was the wife of the late B. W. Bates, former owner and publisher of the News-Review and later co-owner of the Bates Smith Printing Co. In Klamath Falls. Sutherlin Grange To Give Aid To Family Sutherlin Grange recently voted to give money to a family that lost everything in a recent fire. It waa voted to rent the hall tn the Catholic Church from June to 27 for religious school, and to' rent the hall for mass on Thurs day evenings. This rent will go to the burned out family. Evelyn Frotscher was elected secretary for the balance of the year to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Eunice Haslam. Ellen Beck was elected lecturer for the remainder of the year. Lee Wilson, chairman of Pomona fair booth committee, spoke on the preparations being marie for grange bonlhs at the Douglas Coun ty fair. The problem? What to do about Seattle's canine residents. Since the city electorate passed dog leash ordinance, the prob lem has been as slippery to han dle as a Labrador retriever pup with his first downed duck. Sutherlin 4-H Club Picnic Set This Saturday By MRS. BRITTAIN SLACK The What's Cooking 4-H Cl'tb met in Sutherlin with its leader, Mrs. Rose Chandler at the Chandler home. A discussion was held on clans for a picnic May 24 at Umpqua park. The following members were present for the meeting, Marlyn Hays, Barbara Garr, DarTene Chan dler, Linda Moodie, Karen Chan dler and Shirley Mandero. this was the last meeting until September. Darlene Chandler haa been awarded a scholarship and will attend the 4-H summer school at Corvallis in June. Mrs. Chandler thanked all those who assisted in the doll project and it was announced that Mrs. Leta Whilford was winner of the large doll and the small one went to Tex Johnson. The money de rived from this project goes to ward summer school expenses. Cookeries Meet The Cookettes 4-H Club has fin ished a ten week course in meal time fun and the group, under the leadership of Mrs. Betty Harris, has been learning preparations of such foods as hamburgers, cocoa and the preparing of raw vege tables. The following girls of the club held a party at their last meeting, Karren Harris, Karen Watigh, Kathy Moss, Connie Chillson, Shar on Rapp, Beverly and Barbara Curry, Linda Whilford and Chris tine and Frances Cathlina.
