They said it could help stem the swing toward filter types and open the way to use of more to bacco in each cigarette. The House Government Opera tions Committee adopted a report of an investigating subcommittee Werinssday charging that filter tip cigarettes offer no more health protection than ordinary cigaret tes The committee called on the Federal Trade Commission to crack down on what it called mis leading and deceptive advertising. Department officials had no com ment on the committee report it self, but they said recent sharp in crease in sales of filter cigarettes has had an adverse affect on to bacco growers. The latter had been forced to restrict production under ricid controls. The filter tip cigarette uses less tobacco than the ordinary cigaret te because the filter plug replaces its cubic content in tobacco. 1'he Department's marketing service estimated that the filter cigarette has replaced upwards of 12S million pounds of tobacco dur ing the past three years. This to bacco would have brought grow ers upwards of 6.S to 70 million dollsrs. ltllH aal UltfiiiM ifHfMM tv.i-Ut) M a ttH pal MPftt tr Mit-Itiiv itMtf. Salem Judge Will Hear Kelley Case PENDLETON l-Judge George B. Duncan of Salem has been as signed to hear the Roscoe Kelley case in Pendleton. Circuit Judge W. W. Wells pre viously disqualified himself in the case after arraignment of Kelley. Duncan told Wells Wednesday he would be here Feb. 26 to hear arguments on the demurrer filed by attorney Roy Kilpatrick at the time of Kelley's arraignment on a charge of improperly offering a gift to an officer. Kelley's attorney charged the statute was unconstitutional, and that the indictment against Kelley did not set forth facts sufficient to constitute a crime. Kelley. a Umatilla County com missioner, is charged with offer ing a gift of 2.50 to Clifford Smick, March 22. 1957 in return for testi mony that a building in which slot machines and pinhall machines were stored was broken into by city police that day. Smick is a deputy sheriff and self-employed merchant policeman. Later 140 of the machines were; destroyed on order of the Pendle ton Justice of Peace Court. Kelley denied the charge.
