' MOSCOW, Idaho The team title of the Inland Empire Junior College debate tournament at the University of Idaho over the week- ' end was won by Washington State College. The WSC team topped 27 other teams from six Pacific Northwest schools. Second place for teams was taken by Whitman College and third by the Unervisty of Idaho. ( A wave of car vandalism hit this Los An geles suburb starting about three months ago. i - Someone was going around wrecking parked automobiles kicking in windshields and win dows, stomping on hoods and roofs and amashing rear decks. Detectives were puzzled by one aspect: More than half the damaged cars were of one make tSlude baker). The vandalism increased until it reached its peak during the Christmas holidays. By then, how ever, Det. Sgt. John J. Broom was on the trail of the culprits. When he made hit arrests last week of 14 youths, all 18 and 19 years old, the city was shocked. College Students I Fight of the youths were stu dents at Glendale College, four were on the first team of the bas ketball squad. All were from good families and one was an heir to a cake mix fortune. The basketball players and an other boy pleaded guilty to mali cious mischief this week and were given stiff 170-day sentences in Glendale city jail. The others will' appear in court today. Why did they do it No one had the answer, although authori ties and 'parcnls came up with' aeveral ideas. The youths themselves didn't know. Sgt. Broom said one of the basketball players told him that one night, when their team lust a game by only one point, they went out and damaged two cars Still Punle Why did they pick on one par ticular mane: No one knew.
