It said the Slavyanka base was com pleted June 3 and the Kraskino base July 20. A new sub base is "either near completion or being built" at l'oset, about 10 miles south of Kraskino, it added. (Photo Lab) House Passes Measure On Atomic Conference WASHINGTON im House passage sent to President Eisen hower Tuesday legislation paving the way for United States partici pation in the International Atom ic Energy Organization. The legislation, passed on a a voice vote, is a compromise of separate bills passed previously by the Senate and the House. It retains a Senate provision . which would give Congress au-j thority to limit U.S. contributions! of nuclear material to the "atoms j for peace" agency. The Senate passed the measure i Monday shortly after House con-: ferees on the compromise gave up their struggle against restrict-1 ing the President's authority to make such contributions. Rose St., Roseburg Phone OR 3-6633 Two special contests are in store for textile department exhibitors at the 1957 fair, reports Mrs. Archie Ferguson, department superintend ent. Gale Jakel, Douglas County Nccchi-Klna distributor, will award a free Klna sewing machine to the "Queen of the Needle" at the Fair. Each ribbon won in the textile department will be worth points the higher the ribbon, the more points. The exhibitor with the most points will be awarded the sewing machine, and crowned "Queen of the Needle." In addition to the "Queen" con test, Mrs. Ferguson told of the national crochet contest. Local en trants can win a trophy and spe cial cial ribbons, besides a chance the national prizes totaling $4,000. 00. Each entry awarded a nation wide contest bUie ribbon at the fair becomes eligible for the na tional judging which will take place in New York City later in the year. The grand national champion will receive a free trip to New York and Bermuda for two plus $1000 The teen-age girl and men's cham pions will each receive a free trip to New York fo two plus $."00. In addition, cash awards will Ik made to the first three national prize winners in each of lti classiiications and 320 awards to honorable men tion winners. There will be a new face in the canning department at the county fair. Mrs. Carol Season of Kiddle has been appointed the new can ning superintendent. Mrs. Season is experienced in this field as she was a -i-Her for many years. Ix)cal merchants have again promised their latest model freez ers in which to display frozen foods. This means the contestant may take her exhibits home none the worse for wear. Resides the frozen foods, there are classes for all canned foods and vegetables, as well as meats, fish, jellies, jams, preserves and pickles. The canning department boasts new display racKs piacea on an elevated stage for better display of exhibits. What will be a hotly contested award was explained by Mrs. Ada Brumbach, baking superintendent and Mrs. Season. "George West, Hoseburg appliance dealer, will award to the 'Queen of the Kitchen' 'an electric range. The contest will be decided on points. Points will be given for every ribbon won in the bakery and canned foods di visions at the Fair. The exhibitor ; with the most points gels the range and the title 'Queen of the Kit chen." The usual cah premiums will be paid for all the winners in ( the various classes. j A more attractive fruits and veg etables display at the fair is prom ised by department superintendent, ; Bill Tipton. Flats will be supplied by the Fair Board for all entries ! in the foods and vegetables depart ment. The fair this year will be nearly the same date as last year and the number of entries, accord ling to Tipton, will probably over flow the allowed space. Some new classes have been added. Tipton says, and even if you have but 'one "lil' ole tree or row of beans.' there is a place in the Fair for you, ; The Douglas County Fair is the , only fair in the stale that has cooled quarters for the floral show. The artistic ' arrangement section carries such classes as "Yellow Hose of Texas" and "Skip to My Lou" with entires open to individuals and garden clubs throughout the county.
