House Passes Measure
On Atomic Conference
WASHINGTON im House
passage sent to President Eisen
hower Tuesday legislation paving
the way for United States partici
pation in the International Atom
ic Energy Organization.
The legislation, passed on a
a voice vote, is a compromise of
separate bills passed previously
by the Senate and the House.
It retains a Senate provision .
which would give Congress au-j
thority to limit U.S. contributions!
of nuclear material to the "atoms j
for peace" agency.
The Senate passed the measure i
Monday shortly after House con-:
ferees on the compromise gave
up their struggle against restrict-1
ing the President's authority to
make such contributions.

Two special contests are in store
for textile department exhibitors at
the 1957 fair, reports Mrs. Archie
Ferguson, department superintend
ent. Gale Jakel, Douglas County
Nccchi-Klna distributor, will award
a free Klna sewing machine to the
"Queen of the Needle" at the Fair.
Each ribbon won in the textile
department will be worth points
the higher the ribbon, the more
points. The exhibitor with the most
points will be awarded the sewing
machine, and crowned "Queen of
the Needle."
In addition to the "Queen" con
test, Mrs. Ferguson told of the
national crochet contest. Local en
trants can win a trophy and spe
cial cial ribbons, besides a chance
the national prizes totaling $4,000.
00. Each entry awarded a nation
wide contest bUie ribbon at the
fair becomes eligible for the na
tional judging which will take place
in New York City later in the year.
The grand national champion will
receive a free trip to New York
and Bermuda for two plus $1000
The teen-age girl and men's cham
pions will each receive a free trip
to New York fo two plus $."00. In
addition, cash awards will Ik made
to the first three national prize
winners in each of lti classiiications
and 320 awards to honorable men
tion winners.
There will be a new face in the
canning department at the county
fair. Mrs. Carol Season of Kiddle
has been appointed the new can
ning superintendent. Mrs. Season
is experienced in this field as she
was a -i-Her for many years.
Ix)cal merchants have again
promised their latest model freez
ers in which to display frozen
foods. This means the contestant
may take her exhibits home none
the worse for wear. Resides the
frozen foods, there are classes for
all canned foods and vegetables, as
well as meats, fish, jellies, jams,
preserves and pickles. The canning
department boasts new display
racKs piacea on an elevated stage
for better display of exhibits.
What will be a hotly contested
award was explained by Mrs. Ada
Brumbach, baking superintendent
and Mrs. Season. "George West,
Hoseburg appliance dealer, will
award to the 'Queen of the Kitchen'
'an electric range. The contest will
be decided on points. Points will
be given for every ribbon won in
the bakery and canned foods di
visions at the Fair. The exhibitor
; with the most points gels the range
and the title 'Queen of the Kit
chen." The usual cah premiums
will be paid for all the winners in
( the various classes.
j A more attractive fruits and veg
etables display at the fair is prom
ised by department superintendent,
; Bill Tipton. Flats will be supplied
by the Fair Board for all entries
! in the foods and vegetables depart
ment. The fair this year will be
nearly the same date as last year
and the number of entries, accord
ling to Tipton, will probably over
flow the allowed space. Some new
classes have been added. Tipton
says, and even if you have but
'one "lil' ole tree or row of beans.'
there is a place in the Fair for you,
; The Douglas County Fair is the
, only fair in the stale that has
cooled quarters for the floral show.
"Combine this with an enthusias
tic and efficient superintendent,
jMis. Byron McKean, and the won
1 dcrful support that the garden
clubs and others give, and you see
j why we have the best fair floral
' show in the state." says Fair Man
! ager, Dick Turley.
This year a floral dreamland has
i been created, complete with water
fall and an arched stone bridge
over a winding stream. This area,
keeping in theme with the Square
Dance Festival, is named ' Cali
co Gardens."
j Rules for the various horticultur
al classes remain about the same,
j states Mrs. McKean. The artistic
' arrangement section carries such
classes as "Yellow Hose of Texas"
and "Skip to My Lou" with entires
open to individuals and garden
clubs throughout the county.
