Aug. 13, 19S7 Livestock Men Can Cheap Feed, Mixed CORVALLIS Oregon livestock, dairy and poultry farmers can look forward to cheaper feeds this fall but mixed prico trends for their products, report Oregon State College agricultural economists and marketing specialists. Feeder cattle prices during the next six months are expected to bo higher than a year ago as feed lot operators move to cash in on cheaper hay and feed grains, says W. Y. Fowler, OSC livestock mar keting specialist. Fed cattle prices, however, ap pear to be near the peak for this year with prospects for a heavy slaughter of grass-fed cattle, plus larger supplies from feedlots across the country. Hog prices are also likely to de cline seasonally after hitting a late July peak but are not likely to drop below last fall's favorable level, Fowler believes. He says favorable prices haven't stam peded Midwest hog raisers into over-expansion yet. Lamb Price Strong Slaughter lamb prices show signs of holding stronger than normal. A combination of a heavy May June lamb slaughter and stepped up lamb sales promotion may even lead to a slight price rise in Aug ust, Fowler says. Higher wool prices are encouragaing farmers to hold more ewe lambs for flock in creases. Kgg prices are expected to ad vance more than ususal this fall following a 20 per cent cut in the national hatch of flock replace ment chicks last spring. The cut buck will mean fewer pullets and fewer small and medium eggs this fall, reports Charles Fischer, OSC poultry marketing specialist. Broil er prices, however, could he head ed for a sharp drop unless July August production is held below a year ago, the specialist believes. Broiler marketings this fall will face stiff competition from a rec ord turkey crop and good supplies of other incuts. Milk Output Falling Milk production will be declining in Oregon most of the time during the rest of HOT, following Us regular seasonal trend hut fur ther clipped by a drop in the num ber of milk cows. Oregon milk production that hit its l!fi7 peak in May was fully 2 per rent below a year earlier and the lowest for any Mav in 25 years, reports Oscar llagg, Ore gon Male Collego milk marketing specialist. 57.00; fresh hams, 12-18 lb, 4900 54.00.
