12 TK Nwt-RtW, RoMkurf, Or. Thurt., Feb. 21, 19S7 Whearmen Hear Plans To Step Up Consumption PORTLAND I Oregon wheat industry representatives, meeting her in n attempt to find ways to boost the value of their produc tion, heard a number of recom mendauona at Wednesday'a clos ing session. Further research for new, im proved kinds of bakery and other wheat producta was urged by Vie Moen, chairman of the confer ence's marketing committee. The 200 industry representatives also were told by Moen that a Pacific Northwest wheat council should be formed to launch a long-range program for solving fi nancial and other problems of the industry. All segments of the industry should be represented on such a council, he said. The secretary of the Canadian Wheat Board, C. B. Davidson, aaid at a mid-day luncheon meeting that both the United Statea and Canada have a wheat surplus but are dealing with them in different waya. Acreag expansion hat not been a problem in Canada. In Western Canada, Davidson said, the wheat acreage has declined since 1S.5 and was down to 20( million acrea in 1956. The Canadian Wheat Board ad ministers annual pools for wheat. oata and barley and all surpluses are returned to producers. The onlr orice guarantee Cana dlan growers have, Davidson said, la the initial price the board acta for all grades. When the pro ducer takes his wheat to market, he receives the initial price and receives additional paymenta lat er based on the results of the board': sale pool. The conference, held under the direction of Oregon State College and the Oregon Wheat Commis aion, waa to adjourn Wednesday afternoon. Neuberger Asks Californians To Oppose Plan WASHINGTON - Sen. The Oregon tenator released excerpts from a speech he pre pared for Senate delivery inviting Kuchel and Sen. Knnwland of California, the Senata Republican leaser, to won against "partner ship" plana for projects both in California and on the Columbia fliver in the Pacific Northwest. "Now that partnership threatens the Trinity River Basin in their own state we invite them to join us in pushing to passage the bill for the great federal high dam at Hells Canyon," Neuberger's speech said.
