Since everyone it becominu more and more interested in the many phasea of conservation, the ingen ioui methods to conserve water made worthwhile study in Cam as Valley. Comparable To Canning Too mui-b water flows in the winter and too little durum some summers. It it comparable to home canning in the summer (or a bount iful winter menu or animals and insects layini! id their stores of food during the summer for the long winter. Water conservation calls for building up during the the summer dry season. Tha flood and drouth problems In Southern Oregon have necessitated our becoming conservation minded with flash flood conditions at times making any control impossible. The conservation committee of the Camas Valley Garden Club, in making this study, found 10 fam ilies had built 15 pounds sine 1946 for better crops, lessening of fire hazards, making more water avail able for stock and attracting wild geese and ducks. In many cases, the private stock of fish, acquired from the State Game Dept., added pleasure for the whole family. Sifts Differ Tho ponds range from the small ones for gardens created from boards and sandbaga to those made by "cats" and bulldozers with overflows or cement flood gates. Several ponds were washed out during the flood in December of iy.'i6. Practically all overflowed their banks whero wooden or con crete floodgates could not be re moved quickly enough or complete ly .Many decided not enough tree planting had been done above the entrances to control the water and slides and avert flooding or wash ing out of the ponds. Still others felt dams should not be over 10 feet hiuh, so that control would be more feasible by one person. The chief questions were when to build and how deep to make the ponds. All were built hy the ranch ers themselves or with help from friends or neighbors. Avoid Leaks It was found that those building in spring to allow time to settle discovered fewer leaks when wa ter was stored in the fall or winter. The final depth of the pond was a tricny question because of tin presence of shale or bedrock which allow leaks to form. It was found that dams should bo built so that any portion would not settle at 1 different time from another. Some claimed leaks developed mid-pond ana came out hundreds of feet from the pond itself. Tho county extension agent help ed in determining how much water I pond contained. Tho agent also i supplied answers to other prob-1 lems in building. i Became Family Projects j The fact the ponds were family projects became evident when ranchers expressed desires for safe ty in and around the ponds. Thev advised swimming lessons for ev- eryone. They also said children , should only swim with adults pres ent or they should swim in pairs. They also said youngsters should ask permission from owners before swimming in the ponds. Boats, rafts and diving boards I were considered a hazard. The study also showed that purifi-1 cation could be accomplished by kecn.ng an outlet open so the run mnj water could purilv itself or I ttork it with fish to eat the insects. ! 1 "r club's committee also ap-: rx'tnled a rerwirt on methods of, getting federal aid in building a' pond. Amone considering build-1 ins a pond or dam and desiring fed t.iI aid should first file an appli-1 ra'.ion with the Agricultural and! Slabihzation Committee office in I liooin 214 of the rountv courthouse, i from this office, the application sent to the nearest district of fiee. which presently is located at Nuiherhn.
