So, before heading for warmer weather, take these pre cautions: First, cut off the water supply at the street. This can be done by the plumber or, in some cases, by the city water authority. Next, be sure to turn off the water valve inside the house. Then, open all faucets so that the water may drain from the pipes. At this point, it is wise to call the plumber. He will empty the water from toilet bowls and flush tanks besides draining the hot water heater. The plumber also may remove all water from the traps of sinks, lavatories and bathtubs and fill them with a non-freezing agent as an extra precaution. If a pipe-freeze should occur in your home, there are several solu tions. First, examine the pipe to sec if it has cracked from the pressure of the expanding ice. If not, then soak some towels in hot water and apply them to the frozen pipe. Repeat until the ice block is dissolved. Also, you may melt the ice by pouring boiling water down the clogged drain. Above all, don't use electrical appliances of any kind to remove the ice. Electricity, metal and wa ter can be a highly dangerous combination. The safest remedy of all is the plumber. He is the guardian of your plumbing system and knows how to keep your bathroom and kitchen fixtures operating efficiently.
