25-Year Murder Finally Admitted VIROQUE. Wis. HI Ravmond Kroll, who preferred to sacrifice his freedom rather than live out his life tormented by his con science, went to prison today to pay his debt to society. The 46-year-old Davenport, Iowa, man, father of four children, be gan serving a 7 to 14 year term in the Waupun State Prison for a killing 25 years ago. He pleaded guilty Friday before Circuit Judge Lincoln Ncprud to a charge of third degree murder. A former resident of La Crosse, Wis., Kroll told authorities that as a young man of 21. he and a com panion never named by police, at tempted to hold up a rural resi dent named Clarence Sutherland. When Sutherland reached for a I gun, Kroll said, he fired a shot at ithe man and fled. Sutherland re ceived no medical attention for some time and later died of com plications. Kroll went to Davenport where he married, reared four children and led a life of quiet respectabil ity. He finally decided to turn him self in "to clear his conscience," he told authorities. A mental test found him sane and he was per mitted to enter his pleas. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Harris and son, Steve, left recently for Walla Waila, Wash., where Harris is en rolled in the Walla Walla College as an engineering student. He served two years in the U. S. Army and has been employed as a driver for the L'pdegrave Truck ing Co. since his discharge. Frank Kucera drove to Portland Friday to spend the weekend vis iting his wife and family. He was accompanied by his son, Dennis, who is attending Glide school. Gus Carlson of Little River road suffered a severe cut on his right leg above the knee when his knife slipped while trimming linoleum. He was taken to a Roseburg phy sician for medical treatment. Mrs. Mary Strickland, Miss Rose Walker. Cal Davis and Bob Bart men all of Portland spent Satur day visiting Mrs. Strickland's sis ter. Miss Elaine Ash. Dixie Stiffler, 10-year-old daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stif fler. suffered a ruptured liga ment and dislocated ankle when she fell off the curbing while roller skating at Springfield.
