    25-Year Murder Finally Admitted
VIROQUE. Wis. HI Ravmond
Kroll, who preferred to sacrifice
his freedom rather than live out
his life tormented by his con
science, went to prison today to
pay his debt to society.
The 46-year-old Davenport, Iowa,
man, father of four children, be
gan serving a 7 to 14 year term
in the Waupun State Prison for a
killing 25 years ago. He pleaded
guilty Friday before Circuit Judge
Lincoln Ncprud to a charge of
third degree murder.
A former resident of La Crosse,
Wis., Kroll told authorities that as
a young man of 21. he and a com
panion never named by police, at
tempted to hold up a rural resi
dent named Clarence Sutherland.
When Sutherland reached for a
I gun, Kroll said, he fired a shot at
ithe man and fled. Sutherland re
ceived no medical attention for
some time and later died of com
plications. Kroll went to Davenport where
he married, reared four children
and led a life of quiet respectabil
ity. He finally decided to turn him
self in "to clear his conscience,"
he told authorities. A mental test
found him sane and he was per
mitted to enter his pleas.
