Union officials, who have extended the contract expiration to midnight. June 12, went in person to urge these workers to go back to their jobs until negotiations were finished. Too Much Irrigation Water Drops Production SPOKANE Too much ir rigation water caused a sharp drop in sugar beet production in some areas of the Columbia Basin last year, the Grant County extension agent said here. "Over irrigation lends to wash the fertilizers below the root sys tem," Mel A. llagood told a Cham-' ber of Commerce committee meet ing. "Some farmers who used 3 inches of irrigation water in 1953 harvested 17 tons of beets to the1 acre. When imitation was stepned up to 6 inches last year, the beet production dropped to seven tons." llagood said other crops are similarly affected by excessive irrigation.
