Chevrolet plant in Cleveland stopped production with a pre-contract settlement walk
out. Union officials, who have extended the contract expiration to midnight. June 12,
went in person to urge these workers to go back to their jobs until negotiations were
finished.

rigation water caused a sharp drop
in sugar beet production in some
areas of the Columbia Basin last
year, the Grant County extension
agent said here.
"Over irrigation lends to wash
the fertilizers below the root sys
tem," Mel A. llagood told a Cham-'
ber of Commerce committee meet ing.
"Some farmers who used 3
inches of irrigation water in 1953
harvested 17 tons of beets to the1
acre. When imitation was stepned
up to 6 inches last year, the beet
production dropped to seven tons."
llagood said other crops are
similarly affected by excessive irrigation.

Two patrolmen were summoned
at midnight Tuesday In the home
of a woman who reported a boy in
a brown sweater and wearing a
Davy Crockett hat had rlimbed a
tree in her yard and hadn't come
down.
The policemen called up the
darkened tree. They got no re
sponse. They summoned firemen.
A fireman climbed a ladder to
the top of the tree.
Down came the fireman with this

"It means the state and its resi
dents have no control over use of
water on non-navigable streams
passing through federal land,!' he
