COOWN6 il A Oregon's Legislature Has Lighter Side As Well As Serious; Examples Reported By PAUL W. HARVSY JR. SALEM Wi The Lesislature has its lighter side, too. For instance, a senator who likes to mispronounce big words and use them in the wrong places 'old a committee how its action on a bill was pure "chicanery." Except that he repeatedly called it "chknry" several times. Com. mittee members were hard put to keep straight faces. We often sympathize with the lob byists, because they often have to pick up the checks for legislative parties and for lawmakers' meals. But a new low has been reached. A legislator told a lobbyist that some constituents were coming, and the lobbyist was asked to help entertain them. The lobbyist agreed. Fifty persons showed up. The leg islator invited all of them to dinner. The lobbyist paid the $200 bill. P.S. The Lesislature is consid ering a drastic bill to prohibit state employes from accepting gifts from persons who do business with the state. Df. WHOPPER PSYCHIATRIST VOU PASS A HUNDRED 2 ASH CANS ON VOUP ROUTE BEFORE YOU REACH OUR HOUSE Another legislator bitterly op posed a bill, but it was passed. He's so sore at his fellow mem bers who disagreed with him that he thinks he's getting sweet re vengo. With the rollcall on the hated bill on his desk, this member checks it on every rollcall on other bills This enables him to vote against the pet bills of those who opposed him in the first instance. When speaker of the House Ed Geary told a reporter Monday that he and Senate President Elmo Smith had set April 16 as the targ et date for final adjournment, the reporter kiddingly asked Geary if FROM NINE TO FIVE I'm sorry but you've got the I m practically at the lW, Fid lurrritrltet. iBt""" .HWI ii. 11 I All ntt frv4 m. Fri., Apr. 8, 1955 The Newt-Review, Roseburg, Ore, II only last Monday, to give each county one state senator. It would keep the House divided according to population, as both houses now are apportioned. "I don't thjnk it will pass," Geary a Klamath Falls rancher, said. "But if we don't do something by 1960, we legislators from East ern Oregon might as well not come to the Legislature, because Mult nomah County will be running the state." Under the existing apportionment plan, voted by the people in 1952. Multnomah County has 16 repre sentatives and seven senators. After the 1960 census, that coun ty would have about 20 of the 60 representatives, and 10 of the 30 senators. Under the plan Geary likes, East ern Oregon would have 18 of the 36 senators. It looks as though though the race for president of the 1957 Sen ate wl'l be between two lawyers. Sens. Warren GiU, Lebanon-, and Paul Geddes, Roseburg. The contest for speaker of ths next House is wide open. icae. oends a lot on whether the Demo crats can gain the six more seats they need in order to win control. iixscl.
