its lighter side, too.
For instance, a senator who likes
to mispronounce big words and
use them in the wrong places 'old

bill was pure "chicanery."
Except that he repeatedly called
it "chknry" several times. Com.
mittee members were hard put to
keep straight faces.
We often sympathize with the lob
byists, because they often have to
pick up the checks for legislative
parties and for lawmakers' meals.

entertain them. The lobbyist

Fifty persons showed up. The leg
islator invited all of them to dinner.
The lobbyist paid the $200 bill.
P.S. The Lesislature is consid
ering a drastic bill to prohibit state
employes from accepting gifts from
persons who do business with the
state.

to population, as both houses now
are apportioned.
"I don't thjnk it will pass,"
Geary a Klamath Falls rancher,
said. "But if we don't do something
by 1960, we legislators from East
ern Oregon might as well not come
to the Legislature, because Mult
nomah County will be running the
state."
Under the existing apportionment
plan, voted by the people in 1952.
Multnomah County has 16 repre
sentatives and seven senators.
After the 1960 census, that coun
ty would have about 20 of the 60
representatives, and 10 of the 30
senators.
Under the plan Geary likes, East
ern Oregon would have 18 of the
36 senators.
It looks as though though the
race for president of the 1957 Sen
ate wl'l be between two lawyers.
