II Television Fans View President's Press Talk NEW YORK I Million! of -stone Wednesday night the first television fans ' across the nation telecast of a . presidential press witnessed another electronic mile-! conference. The four video networks shared in airing films made at the regu lar White House session Wednes day afternoon. NBC cameras', un der a pool arrangement, recorded the event, but the CBS network was the first on the lir at T p. m. (EST) with the 28 minutes and 23 seconds of film okayed by the White House. From then until' midnight the various networks showed the films, from complete versions' down to two minute briefs. .,- . Del. A.. W. Hubka quoted the press agent, Tony Kent, as saving he fired the shot at Hormel's sug gestion. Hormel denied it. Kent and actor Fred Hartman were booked Wednesday night on suspicion of "feloniously and mali ciously discharging a gun into an inhabited dwelling." The rifle was found in Kent's home, officers said. Hubka said Kent- told him Hor mel, 26, suggested the shooting as a way to "get even with the cops" for Hormel's arrest on charges of possessing marijuana. He never has said why he killed Mrs; Elizabeth Jeanne Henderson, 31, who had arranged a share-the-cost trip with him on a journey eastward. She was going to see her- mother in Ohio. She was stabbed 19 times in an Oklahoma City motel Jan. 10 a year ago and her partly nude body discovered three days later. Loel was arrested when the FBI in Washington checked on the fingerprints of a man arrested in Sanford' on a drunk charge and later released on bond. The man gave his name as Jack McCoy but was in reality Loel. ' The government said it would not, as customary, reveal when he would be taken West. Loel once was police chief, brief ly, at Sandy, Ore. His estranged wife a year ago was Mvin; at Rose burg. - Judge Disagrees With , Drink Buying Age Limit PORTLAND tin A city Judge said here Thursday that if a per son is old enough to be married lie is old enough to buy an alcohol ic drink. Judge John J. Murchison si'.i he believes the State Liquor Con trol Commission' is wrong; in re quiring a person to be 21 before he can buy a drink. Murchison cited state law, say ing that a person is deemed to have reached his or her majority upon being married. All this came up because Mrs. Joyce Whitmore, 18, was accused of buying drinks here and of fal sifying her age in doing so. Murchison found her guilty, but let her go without penalty, saying, "It is a technical violation, hut brought on to some extent by the ' liquor commission's refusing to recognize the law. W-A col orful chaDler of history was closed this week as Bronco Charlie Mil ler, who said he was the last of the pony express riders, was buried in Glens Falls Cemetery. A horse preceded the cortege and carried one of Miller's first saddles. His boots were reversed in the stirrups in the traditional cavalry salute to the dead. Ill I it Ridgway Retained As Chief Of Staff WASHINGTON Wl The Army announced Thursday Gen. Mat thew B. Ridgway will be retained as chief of staff beyond his nor mal retirement date, March 31. In making the announcement, Secretary of the Army Stevens said he was acting under a law authorizing the retention in serv ice of up to five generals beyond the age of 60 who have had 3. years of service. Ridgway was appointed chief of staff on Aug. 15, 1953 for a two year term. Stevens' action will permit him to serve his full two years as the Army's top officer. Without it, Ridgway would have been subject to mandatory retire ment upon reaching the age of 60 at the end of March. The Army announcement con tained no reference to possible ex tension of Ridgway's tour as chief of staff. A native of Canada, Marks re turned to Canada to take charge of the lighthouse at NooUca, B. C, between 1910 and 1920. Then he moved to Corvallis. In his latter years he lived with a daughter, Mrs. Annes Hope. Mist Ladd Visits Mr. and Mrs. Homer Ladd spent the weekend at the Koy Ladd home in Roseburg. Five-year-old San dra Ladd returned with them for a week's visit. Unbeliever, Minister's Wife Debate On Radio' LONDON Ul The British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC) ended its controversial talks by i self styled unbeliever Wednesday night with a debate on religion between the author of the talks end min ister's wife. The two women Mrs. Margaret Knight, 51-year-old university lec turer who advocates "scientific humanism," and Mrs. Jenny Mor ton, 56-year-old wife ot a Scottish clergyman agreed on one thing: Love is all-important in bringing up children. The 30-minute debate followed two solo radio talks by Mrs. Knight on raising children. In them, she likened the Christian story to Greek mythology and suggested that children be told God is no more real than Santa Claus. The Douglas" Fir Plywood Assn. reported this Wednesday, adding that production increased 4 per cent last year, despite the lumber strike, and that order increased 14 per cent. The total output from the 97 fir plywood mills in the three Pacific Coast stales was 3,823,B29,K) feet. The association said this was 75 per cent of the nation's julput. WAGE INCREASE LINCOLN, Wash. I Members of the AFL Lumber and Sawmill Workers' Union at the Lincoln Lumber Co. here will receive wage increases of 7'4 cents an hour under terms of a new contract an nounced Wednesday.
