Kent and actor Fred Hartman
were booked Wednesday night on

Otto Loel Waives
Extradition;
Murder Charged
ORLANDO, Fla. I 0 to
nAuslin Loel, 44, one ot !ht FBI t
10 most wanted men captured
Monday, Thursday waived extra
dition to Oklahoma where he is
wanted in connection with the slay
ing of a young woman traveling
companion.
Loot, of Compton, Calif., had
been -living at Sanford near here
almost a year in a rude snack on
the swampy edge of a junk yard
and working as a machinist.
He never has said why he killed
Mrs; Elizabeth Jeanne Henderson,
31, who had arranged a share-the-cost
trip with him on a journey
eastward. She was going to see
her- mother in Ohio.
She was stabbed 19 times in an
Oklahoma City motel Jan. 10 a
year ago and her partly nude body
discovered three days later.
Loel was arrested when the FBI
in Washington checked on the
fingerprints of a man arrested in
Sanford' on a drunk charge and
later released on bond. The man
gave his name as Jack McCoy but
was in reality Loel. '
The government said it would
not, as customary, reveal when he
would be taken West.
Loel once was police chief, brief
ly, at Sandy, Ore. His estranged
wife a year ago was Mvin; at Rose

Drink Buying Age Limit
PORTLAND tin A city Judge
said here Thursday that if a per
son is old enough to be married
lie is old enough to buy an alcohol
ic drink.
Judge John J. Murchison si'.i
he believes the State Liquor Con
trol Commission' is wrong; in re
quiring a person to be 21 before
he can buy a drink.
Murchison cited state law, say
ing that a person is deemed to
have reached his or her majority
upon being married.
All this came up because Mrs.
Joyce Whitmore, 18, was accused
of buying drinks here and of fal
sifying her age in doing so.
Murchison found her guilty, but
let her go without penalty, saying,
"It is a technical violation, hut
brought on to some extent by the
' liquor commission's refusing to
recognize the law.

Ridgway Retained
As Chief Of Staff
WASHINGTON Wl The Army
announced Thursday Gen. Mat
thew B. Ridgway will be retained
as chief of staff beyond his nor
mal retirement date, March 31.
In making the announcement,
Secretary of the Army Stevens
said he was acting under a law
authorizing the retention in serv
ice of up to five generals beyond
the age of 60 who have had 3.
years of service.
Ridgway was appointed chief of
staff on Aug. 15, 1953 for a two
year term.
Stevens' action will permit him
to serve his full two years as the
Army's top officer.
Without it, Ridgway would have
been subject to mandatory retire
ment upon reaching the age of
60 at the end of March.
The Army announcement con
tained no reference to possible ex
tension of Ridgway's tour as chief
of staff.
Ridgway is reported to have
been unhappy over the adminis
tration's decision to cut back on
the Army while increasing the Air
force.
