BARRETT WASHINGTON - For the first timet in 167 years of congressional history, senators and House mem bers this year will have a special, secluded room for quiet medita tion. . . Capitol architect George Stewart said that the meditation room, authorized by Congress last year, will be ready for use this week. The idea is to provide a com pletely private, quiet, restful spot in the midst of, yet somehow re moved from the tensions and pressures of politics and legisla tive action. An office just off the Capitol ro tunda halfway between the House and Senate has been re modeled for this purpose. It is only about 17 feet square. It will have a large blue and While stained glass window, hunt ed from behind. Workmen in Cali fornia's 21st congressional district are volunteering labor in off hours to nuke the window. The design will show a candle symbolizing light; a scroll representing the Sermon on the Mount; and an open book, symbolizing the Book of the Law. The window will be put in place soon. The rest of the room hat been completed. Compensation Agency Accepting Federal Claims SALEM W The Oregon Unem ployment Compensation Commis sion announced Tuesday that it is accepting claims from former fed eral employes, who now are eli gible for benefits. About 18,000 federal workers m Oregon now are covered by unem ployment compensation. John Ben Shepperd has been threatened with a "bullet in the back of the head" if he doesn't stop his probe of veterans' land sales, one of his assistants report ed. The threat was made to Mrs. Shepperd in a telephone call, Sam Ratliff, assistant attorney general. reported. Mrs. Shepperd, described b y Ratliff as "hysterical" because of Die threat, telephoned Ratliff here. bnepperd at the time was clos eted here with the Dewitt County grand jury, which is probing the sale of land to veterans. Ratliff acepmpamed him. The threat was telephoned lo the Shepperd home in Austin, the state capital. The attorney general has been looking into alleged regularities in Texas' hundred million dollar vet erans land program. Langlie New Chairman Of Power Policy Group BOISE, Idaho Wl Gov. Len Jordan of Idaho, retiring chairman of the Northwest Governors' Pow er Policy Committee, said this week Washington's Gov. Arthur B. Langlie has been elected chair man of the organization "at least temporarily." Jordan, who leaves soon to tike over the chairmanship of the Inter national Joint Commission, said Langlie would call a meeting of the GPC "at soon as the admin istrative and legislative duties of the governors permit." Jordan has been chairman of the GPPC since It was formed two years go. He has completed his gubernatorial term. S. Korea Accuses 'rthi Or iSu'ing 40 New Air Bases SEOUL W South Korea has accuded the Communists of building more than 40 air bases and bringing in 110,000 new troops and 200 Russian - built tanks -in violation of the armistice. The charges were made bv Gen. Lee Hyung Keun, chairman of the kok. joint chiefs of Staff, in a new year article published in the Korean Republic, English lan guage newspaper. Adm. Arthur Radford, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff. inspected the Korean front lines briefly Monday before leaving for Japan for further conferences on his tour of the Orient. He told newsmen here Sunday atomic weapons would be used "if necessary" to repel any new ag gression in Korea. Gen. Lee charged in his article: 'The enemy that was reeline at the time of the armistice has now regained its strength and is now able to launch another aggressive action." He said that In addition to new troops and tanks, the Reds arc filling their, new air basos with more than 500 aircraft, about h:ilf jet fighters and half jet bombers. Pole Given Citizenship With Modified O-ith PORTLAND U) A 25-ycar-old Oregon State College student, a native of Poland, was granted citizenship this week despite his refusal to repeat the words "so help me God in the cmzcnship oath. He Is Walter IHvwacki. a self- proclaimed atheist who was denied citizenship by leclerai judge in Honolulu when he said he could not conscientiously use the tradi tional oath with its reference to God. Plywacki appealed the Hawaiian court ruling to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco and that court reversed the earlier decision. Plywacki then applied for citi zenship here and it was granted. He affirmed the oath before a fed eral judge. The young Pole came to the United States in June, 1947, as a stowaway. He later joined the U. S. Air Force and served in the Korean War. He first applied for citizenship at Honolulu wbue en route home lioin Okinawa. Wreckage Of Big Ship, Bridge Cleared In Suez PORT SAID I A long line of ships moved through the Suez Ca nal iucsaay alter worxmcn cicarca away the wreckage of a ship bridge collision that blocked tiie strategic waterway four days. A thick fog which Monday night halted resumption of navigation lifted early Tuesday morning, and 69 ships backed up here sailed southward through the canal. The ships included liners, freighters and tankers. Another 34 ships waited to move northward from tho Hitler Laics, above the canal's southern en trance. Tiie canal was blocked last Fri day when the Greek-owned tanker World Peace smashed into an arm of a swing bridge carrying a r.nl road across the waterway 50 miles south of Port Said.
