14 Tlit Nw-Rview, Koteburg, Chemical Control For Vegetables, , Fruits Proposed WASHINGTON W The Depart ment of Welfare announced Wed' nesday a proposed set of regula tions to govern the amounts of chemical residues permissible on fruits and vegetables shipped across state lines. The regulations, in preparation smce 1950, are designed u proicc, human heines from Dossiblv harm ful residues of pesticides sprayed or dusted on fruits and vegetables. Interested parties were given 60 days in wflion to me wn me ruou and Drug Administration any ex ceptions. The effective date of the regulations was not specified. , The department said the pro posed; regulations cover pesuuiues ranging from those which are vir tually harmless to some which are among the most potent poisons known. One regulation proposes toler ances tor 26 pesuciaes ra cviujuuu use, based on scienunc aaia ae- veiopea ai nearuis in jjv. A second reeulation sets up pro cedure under which applications to revise tolerances or set them up or any new pesticide chemicals would be processed. The proposed regulations name the pesuciaes, give tne projios- tolerance, and list the food crops in which afh aDnlieS. Under the regulations, any of the listed fruits ana vegeiaoies may bo distributed legally In inter state commerce if they do not carry imore than the specified tol erance. Nuclear Power Study Committee Named By AEC WASHINGTON tfl The Atom ie Energy Commission Wednes day announced an agreement with a nine-company group for a study aimed 'toward the developmct of a nuclear power reactor for the western United States. ' The association, known as the Rocky Mountain Nuclear Power Study Group, will establish offic es in Idaho Falls, Idaho. The com panies, paying all the cost, will contribute $5,000 each and will as sign 10 full time employes to the task. In the group are Arizona Pub lic Service Co., Phoenix; Ebasco Services Inc., New York; Fluor Corp. Ltd., Los Angeles; Idaho Power Co., Boise; Minnesota Min ing It Manufacturing Co. St. Paul; Phillips Petroleum Co., Barlles ville, Okla.; Public Service Co. of Colorado, Denver; Riley Stoker Co., Worcester, Mass., and Utah Power & Light Co., Salt Lake City. Lewis L. The department also alleged vio lation of the Wilson Tariff Act, which forbids conspiracies relating to imports and exports. ; The government's suit cited vir tually all of the large watch com panies in the United States which assemble Swiss-made parts. Four-Man Survey Team To Study Cougar Dam Site PORTLAND on Army Engi neers Wednesday called lor bids on furnishing a four-man survey team to do about 15 days prelim inary survey work at Cougar Res ervoir near Blue River. The bids will be opened here next Tuesday. . ' The Engineers' Portland district office has $150,000 for planning the Cougar project this fiscal year. The proposed Cougar Dam site is on the South Fork of the Me Kenzie River about 4 miles above the river mouth. It would be a rock-fill type embankment 1.630 feet long with a maximum height of 445 feet and would form a res ervoir providing 155,000 acre-feet of flood control storage. Installation of power-generating facilities at the site has been au thorized.. Estimated cost of the project,' part of a co-ordinated reservoir system planned by Army Engi neers, fs more than 37 million dol lars.
