Cancer-Causing Viruses Travel As Hitchhikers

cauied by viruses itchiking rides
through our lives, but attacking
only some of us, was described
here.

kemia, the cancer of the blood.

extract made even from the em
bryo can pass it on to baby mice of
the resistant strain or family.
Now Gross finds that the extract
cancer of the salivary gland in
the neck in the injected mice.
When prepared one way, it
causes leukemia. Prepared anoth
er way, it brings on neck cancer.
The explanation for this may
be the presence of two kinds of
virus particles, one larger than
the other. The bigger one, he sug
gests, could be the hitchhiker
for leukemia, the smaller one the
agent for the neck cancer. It is
also possible that one single part
icle is causing both diseases,
Exiled Prince Killed
In Traffic Accident

26-year-old Prince Nicholas of
Yugoslavia was killed in an auto
mobile accident as he drove
through this Buckinghamshire vil
lage Monday.
The prince was a cousin of ex
King Peler and the younger son of
Prince Paul, regent for the young
kine before World War II. He also
was a nephew of the Duchess of
Kent, the former Princess Marina
of Greece.'
Indian Burial
Ban Will Receive
High Court Ruling
WASHINGTON I The Su
preme Court Monday agreed to
rule on the case of the American
Indian who lost his life in Korea
and then was denied burial in a
Sioux City, Iowa, cemetery.
Specifically, the highest tribunal
will decide whether the Iowa su
preme court was right in holding
that the cemetery could not be
sued for $60,000 damages by the
widow of the war veteran.
One issue is whether a treaty
ca.i supersede state laws a point
debated at length by the Senate
earlier this year.
The Iowa court's ruling was ap
pealed by Mrs. F, velyn Rice,
white widow of the Indian, Sgt.
John Rice.
Mrs. Rice contracted with the
Sioux City Memorial Park Ceme
tery to bury her husband, but aft
er a gravesMe service the ceme
tery notified the widow the body
would not be lowered into the
grave. A section of the contract
said burial privileges were re
stricted to Caucasians.
Rice later was buried with mil
itary honors in Arlington National
Cemetery.
The Iowa supreme court, in rul
ing Mrs. Rice had no grou& to
sue the cemlery, said it could not
declare void any private contract

Public Schools personnel outlin
ing purposes and objectives of
several facets of the school sys
tem. The articles will run from
time to time in the News-Review.)
Teachers and administrators of
the Roseburg Schools are present
ly working on a statement thaj
will reflect the best thinking of
the teachers on the question "What
ought the schools to do?"
Of Interest in connection with
this project is a little booklet is
sued recently by the United States
Office of Education entitled,
"Good Schools Don't Just Hap
pen." This booklet wai the result of
three conferences of lay leaders
and educators. In answering the
question, "What are the goals of a
good school?" this group listed the
following purposes:
first, a good school should help
youth to acquire the basic tools
of learning. These tools are read
ing, writing and arithmetic. Oth
er basic skills help youth to think
for life. To accomplish toil goal,
the schools must provide personal
assistance to individual boys and
girls in making their plans about
education, careers and employ
ment. Boys and girla need guidance to
plan their own actions wisely in
the full light of all the facts that
can be mustered about themselves
and about the world in which the
live and work.
The third objective of a good
school is to help youth to prepare
fir get, and hold a job. Through
work experience youth develops
abilities, work habits and attitudes.
They learn about work standards,
safety practices, mangement pol
icies, union practices, relation
ships with employers and employ
es, working under direction, and
how to provide for economic se
curity. ,
The fourth goal is to help youth
maintain menial health and physi
cal fitness. These are basic to
any kind of successful living. The
job of building and maintaining
health is both an individual and
community responsibility.
The fifth measure 01 a gooa
rationally, to express their school is to help youth to be good
thoughts clearly, to listen and ob- mnsumers. To maintain our high

A sixth goal is to help youth to
do what is right. Personal rela
tionships with other members of

cent intentions, mutual confidence,
and insight into ethical and spir
itual values.
Seventh objective of a good
school is to help youth to be good
citizens. The American democracy
can be secure only if an informed
citizenry understands it, believes
in it and stand by it. The school
should base its program of good
citizenship education upon our
democratic heritage and the val
ues to which the American de
mocracy is committed. Actual
participation in planning and con
ducting school-home and commu
nity activities is basic to the de
velopment of ctizenship.

Statehood Bill Again Stymied
WASHINGTON W An objec
tion by House Democratic leader
Rayburn of Texas Monday blocked
ih. Hawaii-Alaska statehood bill
from going to conference with the
Senate.
That left the Senate - approver
measure in a parliamentary suu
ation where it will come to a
House vole only ii the rules com
mittee gives it a special rule.
There is strong sentiment in tne
Rules Committee against state
hood for Alaska, so the bill may
be stymied for the session.
Rayburn told the House he
would continue to object to send
ing the bill to conference because
"it isn't the bill that passed the
House."
The House passed a bill for
Hawaii statehood last year. The
Senate amended it thii year to
include statehood for Alaska.
Had the bill gone to conference,
a Senate-House committee would
have attempted to reach an agree
ment. The committee'i decision
would then have gone automati
cally to a vol. by the House itself.
