Finally, in 1857, the people voted to call a convention in Salem to draft a state constitution. Portland Named Headquarters For Coast BLM WASHINGTON W Secretary of the Interior McKay Friday an nounced esiaoJisrment ot new ! area headquarters of the Bureau of Land Management in Portland, Ore., Salt Lake City and Denver. The new area directors, and the states under each include: Area l Portland James F. Doyle, now assistant BLM re gional administrator there; Wash ington, Oregon and California. The new area offices will replace six regional offices in Billings, ! San Francisco, Albuquerque, i Washington, Portland and Salt Luke City. BLM Director Edward Woozley said establishment of the area of fices and appointment of the three administrators is the first step to ward carrying out recommenda tions of a survey team for reor ganization of the bureau. Secre tary McKay approved the recom mendations. Woozley said in a news release that the area offices have been located "to give better economical service according to geographical locations." Eleven state BLM Offices to be operating units for the area offi ces will be located in Spokane, Wash.; Portland; Boise, Idaho; Billings; Cheyenne, Wyo.; Denver; Salt Lake City; Reno, Nev.; Sac ramento, Calif.; Phoenix, Ariz.; and Sanata Fe, N.M. A branch of the Sacramento office will be in Los Angeles. William Guernsey, now Portland regional director, will be called here "to accept a special respon sible assignment, pending further Washington office reorganization," wouziey sam. Everest, the world's highest. "You don't like to stand still," he told a news conference here Thursday. "The mountains are there and you feel as u you d like to try them." So he and others who helped in the successful assault of Everest last year are mapping plans for fu ture conquests, particularly of trou blesome Kangchengjunga, the world's third highest mountain, which towers within 1,000 feet of Everest's height.
