people voted for the constitution,

' John Whiteaker, a Democrat,
was the first governor. He was
seated in the governor's chair on
Feb. 14, 1859, when Oregon was
admitted to the Union.
The movement for statehood got
under way in 1853 when Washing
ton Territory was created out of
the old Oregon Territory. This left
Oregon with the same boundaries
as those of today.
And since it's Linoln's birthday

ganization of the bureau. Secre

mendations. Woozley said in a news release
that the area offices have been
located "to give better economical
service according to geographical
locations."

ces will be located in Spokane,
Wash.; Portland; Boise, Idaho;
Billings; Cheyenne, Wyo.; Denver;
Salt Lake City; Reno, Nev.; Sac
ramento, Calif.; Phoenix, Ariz.;
and Sanata Fe, N.M. A branch of
the Sacramento office will be in
Los Angeles.

Hillary Wants To Climb Again

Hillary, who sometimes keeps bees
and sometimes climbs mountains,
isn't content to rest on his laurels
after scaling Mt. Everest, the
world's highest.
"You don't like to stand still,"
he told a news conference here
Thursday. "The mountains are
there and you feel as u you d like
to try them."
So he and others who helped in
the successful assault of Everest
last year are mapping plans for fu
ture conquests, particularly of trou
blesome Kangchengjunga, the
world's third highest mountain,
which towers within 1,000 feet of
Everest's height.
Brigadier Sir John Hunt, who
led the expedition up Everest, said
he did not believe man could regu
larly live and work at altitudes
