II Set., Feb. 21, 1953 The News-Review, Roteburf, Or. 13 Importers Balk At Increasing Wheat Ceilings WASHINGTON I - Importing countries continued to balk Thurs day at any sizeable price increase in wheat ceilings. The International Wheat Coun cil is winding up its third week of bargaining on the trade agree ment, which expires July 31. - Under it, the 42 importing na tions have been able to buy over two billion bushels of wheat st a celling of $1.80 a bushel. Delegates read President' Eisen hower's news . conference state ment Wednesday that this amount ed to a U. S. subsidy of 77 cents a bushel. As chief exporter, the U. S, Is asking a ceiling of $2.50, but a conference in London last spring foundered on this demand and there is little chance of its being met. Canada and Australia, the other big exporters, are ' asking 12.25., The Importers, of which Britain is the largest, began with the posi tion that world prices of wheat are on a downward trend and that there is no reason for an Increase in the $1.80 ceiling. Since then it has been authoritatively reported that they offered $1.90, stipulating that this is their last price. Exporters indicated that they would come down on their price, but not below $2. The arguing and bargaining has been done behind closed doors, with press and public barred. Council Chairman F. Shced And erson of Britain has asked dele gates to make no public state- menu).
