Cardinals Sold To Beer Concern For $3,750,000 ST. LOUIS OB The St. Louis Cardinals, close to being trans ferred to Milwaukee a week ago, counted themselves as one of the "money clubs" today with solid financial backing in the old home town. Anheuser-Busch. Inc.. one of the nation's largest breweries, bought the club yesterday for the an nounced purpose of keeping the Luminals in at. Louis. That puts the Rcdbirds in the class of such well-heeled clubs as the Boston Red Sox of Tom Yaw key, the New York Yankees of Dan Topping, the Dctrcit Tigers of Walter O. Briggs, and the Chicago Cubs of Phil Wrigley. August A. 3uich Jr., 53 year-old president of the multimillion-dollar brewery who will become pres ident of the Cardinals, said the sale was a 31 million dollar trans action. Of that amount. 2V& million was paid to Fred Saigh, whose career as a ciud owner was cut short by a 15-month prison sentence for federal income tax evasion. Busch said that in addition to the sum j paid Saigh "we assumed an in l tlohtedness of l'i million dollars." j Busch, who planned an inspec- tion trip today to the Cardinal of- fices at Sportsman's Park, said he will take an active part in man ; agement of th far-flung Cardinal organization. j William Walsingham Jr., re ! maining as vice president, will be tne operating nesd of the organi zation which operates nine farm clubs and has working agreements with six others.
