General." cannot be ut tered in Eisenhower's presence. He put himself across. He is the can didate of the people, even of many millions in the traditionally Demo cratic South. And that makes him the first genuinely national presi dent to emerge since the Civil War. The 32 million voters who chose Eisenhower are a vast, unorgan ized majority. The only bonds that join them are their tremendous faith in the General and their over whelming wish for a new approach to their accummulaled problems. Stunning as was their action on Nov. 4, they did not by that fact create a lasting Republican major ity in this nation, nor even a fresh set of organized blocs to supplant those which have been voting Dem ocratic steadily since 1932. But the point of immediate im portance is not thit the old blocs still exist. It is that Eisenhower's appeal was so powerful that he sliced deep into all blocs. Ironically, this was the first that was said about Eisenhower when his name was first mentioned for the presidency. He was pictured as a man for whom Americans felt such warm affection that he would be assured of their whole hearted endorsement should he submit himself to their judgment at the polls. It was this portrait of his stature that helped him decide to run. But then, when the spring pri maries came on, the picture seem ed altered. Here, contesting for the nomination with Senator Taft and others, Eisenhower suddenly found himself thrust into the middle of Hie bitter power struggle for con trol of his party. Those who cham. Accountancy School Offers Courses Here The Pacific School of Account ancy has opened its courses to Roseburg residents, C. E. Pickles, representative, has announced. The school operated here about six years ago. Under the school's course of study no regular classes are held. Students work from printed les sons, but a local certified public accountant Joe Olsen is avail able for consultation. Pickles said. The school, which is licensed by the Oregon State Department of Public Instruction, offers courses in public accounting, CPA coach ing, tax control, cost accounting, general motor system comptroller ship and executive training. It appeared many who had told him the country wuuld be his at a stroke men like Governor Dew ey, Paul Hoffman, and Senators Lodge and Duff had given him false intelligence. They seemed to slip into the shadows after Chicago. into the forefront. If not the ascendancy, moved men who had been impressed by all the signs of opposition, who believed therefore that Eisenhower would have to temporize and compromise and wheedle to win the backing needed for election. Now we know that these men vastly underrated his strength with tne people, that he need not have lowered his campaign sights or directed special appeals to special regions. J he people already had determined to take him, on past performance and on faith. j Eisenhower has the "c ear call to I duty" he said he wanted to hear. In sounding it, the American people : have automatically elevated him to j a position of tremendous power i and prestige. They have given him his freedom to act for the good of all his countrymen, and his lib erty to shut his ears to narrow ap peals from any quarter. They have given him the oppor tunity to be great. The Sutherlin City Council In structed City Manager W. D. Boll man to have storm sewers in stalled on Sutherlin's Umpqua street after complaints were re ceived at Monday night's coun cil meeting. Bollman said seven or eight per sons had requested the instal lation. The city manager reported the cost would be about $800 for materials plus the cost of labor. The council also instructed Cun ningham and Associates, an engi neering firm, to make a cost sur vey for a proposed sewage dis posal plant on the south side of Sutherlin. As yet no determination of the location of the disposal plant has been made. It was suggested ore viously that Sutherlin and Oak land build a joint disposal plant. The plant would be part of Suther' lin's proposed $500,000 sewage project. Bollman reported that a repre sentative of the engineering firm is expected in Sutherlin next week to study the sewer project. The city has issued an invita tion to the public to inspect the city's new 1,150.000-gallon reservoir now being completed north of town. Bollman suggested that if anyone is interested in seeing the inside of a reservoir before it's sealed, here's his chance. The tank will be open for inspection Sunday afternoon The reservoir is expected to be completed next week and in op eration as soon as tests can be irade, Bollman said. The water system intake on Calapooia Creek is expected to be finished in an other week or two.
