Ho By Chic Young imlin Americans May Grow Old, But Middle Aged-Never! By HAL BOYLE NEW YORK I Nobody likes to get caught in the middle and that applies to middle age, too. Americans as a people are par ticularly reluctant to face the (act of middle age. "1 ain't as young as I used to be," the average man says grudg ingly, and lets it go at that. He is reconciled to the thought that in time he will be old. But middle age! neveer! In his mind he stays a youth until his second childhood. About the only people in Ameri ca who claim they are middle aged are the elderly. This seems a shame to me. For if one is really middle-aged, admits it publicly, and acts his age, he can get a great deal more out of life than by imitating col lege boys. Middle age Is like baldness. It Is better to relax and enjoy it than try to comb it over and hide it from your friends. The big advantage of being middle-aged is that you can still savor most of the tempered pleasures of youtli and demand many of the privileges of the elderly. You can keep a foot in both camps. And it can be a pleasant straddle. When you' are mwaie-agea you are still young enough to do any thing you really want, but you have a perfect excuse to get out of any hectic foolishness that no longer appeals to you. You can still dance or play poker as late as you choose, but when you go fishing the next morning you can point at, your graying temples and let the young people row the boat. Middle age is an advantage fi nancially and socially. Tell your boss, "well, chief, I'm middle-aRed at last," and he will have, to give you a raise in pay, figuring a man of your maturity ought to be mak ing more money. You can be the life of any party, too, for women will still think you are attractive and your wife won't mind, because she knows you no longer are tempted. (Editor's note: Boyle must be dreaming.) Yes, middle age is best. It is the period with no drawbacks. It is like a banked fire that gives a steady warmth, blowing neither too hot nor too cold. If more people realized this, they would gladly confess to middle age. But many are middle-aged and don't know it. How can you tell?-It isn't exactly a matter of years. A dog is middle-aged -at six, but a college president of 45 is considered young. The real test is inner, not chron ological. Here are a few signposts of middle age: You turn first to the obituaries ATTENTION, CAR OWNERS ! Install your own mufflers tail pipes generator and starters and reline your own brakes at our shop. Picker Line' Turns Back CIO Cannery Workers ASTORIA I About 200 CIO cannery workers refused to crosi a fishermen's picket line here Fri day at the Columbia River Pack ers Association cannery. Police stood by as the cannery workers milled around outside the plant, booing a few workers who reported for work at the Elmore plant. The workers observed a pic ket line set up by the Columbia River Fishermen's Protective Un ion independent, which is striking for higher fish prices. The fishermen's union had a ne gotiation meeting scheduled for Friday with cannery representa tives. The packers association offered striking fishermen 22' i cents a pound for all salmon caught until the end of the season. That offer ii under the 2SV cents sought by the union. In the morning newspaper, instead of the sports page, and you feel vaguely cheated if somebody in teresting hasn't died the night be fore. You pay more attention, to the weather, and are sure the sum mers are hotter than they used to be. You reach for an umbrella if the sky is the least bit cloudy. You don't listen to your wife any better, but vou obey her more. When you come to a flight of stairs, you think of the stairs and not what is waiting at their top You don't sit down. Your knees unbuckle and vou sag. Your best friend is no longer dog, but your bottle of sodium bicarbonate Dills. You think tceo-agers are much noisier and more worthless than when you were one When you go to church, you catch yourself listening to what the minister is saying. These are just a few signs of middle age. But the surest one of all is for a man to sit down ana write himself a piece like this. About 4 to 8 per cent of ocean water is salt. WHY BE SICK?
