' By Jo Fischer By Chic Young Red Cross Gray Ladies Cap Seven At Annual Meeting Seven Gray Ladles were capped at the annual meeting of the Doug las County Chapter of the Amer ican National Red Cross in the Armory Friday night. Capped wtre Frances Smllh, El eanor Richter, Grace Nichols, Blanch Marr, Elsille Martin and Larrie Hill. Unable to be present to receive her cap was Mary But ler. Awarded for the first time in the chapter's history were three 1,000-hour service bars to Gray Ladies Esther Harpham, Grace Raymond and Rita Barcus. Caps were awarded by Mrs. W. A. Raymond, Gray Lady chair man. Pins were presented by Mrs. Barcus, Veterans Administration Volunteer Service Corps represen tative. Dr. John Haskins. manager of the Roseburg Veterans Hospital, greeted the Red Cross workers on behalf of the hospital. A welcome to the corps was given by Mrs. Jack Myers, service groups chair man. Service stripes were awarded by Mrs. Myers to Emma and Virginia Long. Unable to attend to receive their stripes were Capilal Abbott, Mary Butler, Allie Dyer and Es sie Jones. Mrs. Ethel Minium re ceived a chevron. Additional Garden Valley Women To Picnic By MRS. CARL SCHMIDT The Garden Valley Women's Club will have a picnic Aug. 3 at S p.m. at the, clubhouse. , . News Briefs Mr. and Mrs. Clem Schneider and son, Marvin, accompanied by Adam Schneider of Roseburg tour ed to San Francisco by way of Highway 101. They returned on Highway 99. On Wednesday, Mrs. Carl Schnei der, John, Billy and Carol of Kirk land came for a few days visit with Mr. and Mrs. Clem Schneider. Dr. Schneider could not leave Kirk land because he could not find an assistant to carry on his practice. Mrs. Carl Schneider spent most of her vacation with friends and rela tives in Eugene. Dr. and Mrs. T. J. Waaoner are In Portland for business and pleas ure. Mr. and Mrs. O. F. Michel of Garden Valley, Who spent a week traveling to Yellowstone National Park, have returned home. Laurelee Winniford and her aunt. Mrs. Anne Rainwater, are spend ing iwo weens vacation in lowa visiting relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Emmctt Wallers journeyed to San Francisco where they saw their son Jack, who was on shore leave from his ship. They also visited a begonia grower at Capatolia, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. John Denton and son, Robert, of Memphis, Tonn., have been visiting for the past five week! with Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Denton of Garden Valley. They are returning home by way of Los Angeles where they will visit rcJa lives. The President of the United States had to pay for his own transportation up until the time of the automobile. Mention was also made of the cooperation and assistance re ceived from Mr. and Mrs. (J. n Hoover of the VFW: Mrs. Walter Olmscheid of the American Le gion; I.t. and Mrs. R. L. Mad sen of the Salvation Army; Ed win Short, Veterans officer, and Lois Baker of the local welfare office. Also receiving special recogni tion were Bloodmobile workers. Various phases of Gray Lady volunteers were told by Mrs. Ken neth Hall, Oswego, Ore., field con sultant for service groups. A short talk on cooperation over the state was made by Mrs. Carl Wim berly, grand matron of the Grand Chapter of OES. Mrs. George Hunter, canteen chairman, served punch and cook ies. TRUCK DRIVERS NEW YORK I Truck drivers were involved in nearly twice as many accidents as passenger cars in 1950, according to the latest statistics of the National Safety Council. The council figures reveal that trucks were involved in 2.11 acci dents per 100,000 vehicle miles while tne passenger-car rate was 1.07. The figures also revealed that drivers west of the Mississippi Riv. er were safer than drivers in the eastern part of the nation. The eastern rate was 1.28 accidents per 100,000 vehicle miles while the western rate was only .85. Korea. He is Master Sgt. Lothar A. Pallentin, who was captured by the U.S. 101st Airborne . Division during the "Battle of the Bulge" in World War II. After his capture In December, 1944, Pallentin spent the rest of the war in prisoner camps in Vir ginia and New York. Then he was returned to Germany where he worked for occupation forces until he entered the U.S. as an immigrant In July, 1949. He resided with an uncle In Belleville, N. J. until inducted into the U.
