Grange Head Sees Move To Boost Sales Tax Plan LA GRANDE W The 79th annual convention of the Oregon State Grange went into its business session here Tuesday fo'lowing the annual address Monday by State Master Elmer McClure. He said the Grange should con tinue its traditional opposition to proposals for a state sales tax. A measure which is to appear on the November election -ballot is a "major step toward enactment of the sales tax," he said. He was referring to a measure which would Impose a six-mill limit on state property taxes. He also told the Grange it should oppose an initiative measure which calls for removal of wholesale and retail milk prices from state con trols. McClure urged support of two other initiative measures. One would ban pari-mutual betting and the other would -make standard time mandatory throughout the state. He told the Grange it should con tinue its opposition to the proposed Pelton Dam on .the Deschutes River but should support federal construction of the proposed Hells Canyon Dam. on the Snake Riucr. N. Mexico Prison Guard Found Fatally Stabbed SANTA FE, N. M. Wl A guard at the New Mexico penitentiary was found stabbed to death Wednesday In a tier ot cells which housed new arrivals and prisoners being disciplined.' . Asst. Warden Morris Abrams said an unarmed cell keeper, File mon J. Ortiz, 54, had been stabbed in the chest and that traces of blood and other evidence indicated he had been dragged about 40 feet along the floor. Lumber Output In May Exceeds 5-Year Average PORTLAND Production of lumber on the Douglas fir region at the end of May totaled 4.254 bil lion board feet, 6.7 per cent be low output for the same period last year, according to Harris E. Smith, secretary of the West Coast Lum bermen's Association. . Although below 1951 record cut. lumber produced so far this year is 4.2 per cent above the last five year average,! Smith said. Orders through May are 8.3 per cent be hind last -'ear and shipments are off 7.4 per cent. Smith said orders of 4.241 billion feet and shipments of 4.296 billion feet are keeping close pace with output for the first five months.
