Thur., Ftb. 21, 195Z FOUNDER'S DAY CELEBRATED AT YONCALLA RECENTLY A ' crowd gathered at the Yon calla High School gym Monday evening, Feb. 11 to celebrate , Founderi Day of the P.T.A. A program was enjoyed consisting of an accordian solo by Jane Warner, accompanied by Mrs. Felix Latham and several fine band numbers under the direction of the band leader Mr. Dorr. A short Founders Day play was di rected by Mrs. Clara Shirley. Rev. Mr. Knight of the Methodist Church gave a talk on "The Spir itual Responsibilities of the Teach ers." LeRoy Hanson, high school principal, spoke on the require ments of high school students, in comparison to the grade school pupils. The guests were invited into the borne economics room, which was beautifully decorated. A large birthday cake, baked by the home economics students under the direction of Mrs. Henniman, was served from a decorated table, covered with a lace cloth and a large bouquet of red and white carnations. Mrs. Dan Wright and Mrs. Lucille Grass were pouring. During the program, Mrs. Dora Benner, vice president of the lo cal P.T.A., presented beautiful cor sages to past presidents, Mrs. Ha zel Wright, Mrs. Audrey Flury, Mrs. Lucille Grass and Mrs. Mil dred Thiel. Also the present presi dent, Mrs. Olive Currier. She gave a corsage to Mrs. Goodwin, who had charge of the tea. LOOKINOGLASS HOME EXTENSION UNIT MEETS AT RUDIIK HOME RECENTLY The Lookingglass Home Exten sion Unit met recently at the home of Mrs. John Rudzik. Project leaders, Mrs. Mae Green and Hrs. Louis Robertson prepared and served a delicious oven meal. Those present were: Mrs. E. E. OUivant, Mrs, John Maddox, Mrs. Milton Vance, Mrs. Burton Forbes, Mrs. Louis Robertson, Mrs. Ar thur Marsh, Mrs. George Marsh, Mrs. Charles Green, Mrs. C. W. Garrett, Mrs. Charles Forbes, Mrs. Lonnie Marlow. Mrs. Maur ice Forbes, Mrs. William Niebaum and the hostess, Mrs, John Bud zik. MELROSE PTA HOLDS INTERESTING MEETING . The Melrose PTA met with an interesting session Thursday eve ning at the Melrose School. Vera Wooten, president, had charge of the business session. The ways and means committee announced that an auction would be held at the I Melrose School, Friday evening at eight o'clock. Pie and coffee will be sold. Name tags were presented to each member to help get acquaint ed. . Mr. Jarvls' eighth grade room had the largest attendance during th evening. A Founder's day program with Mrs. Zelma Sand, chairman, was interesting. She told of the history of the PTA which was started in Feb. 17. 1879. Refreshments were served by the sixth grade mothers. The next meeting will be March 13 with the nrncram being "Dad's Nieht !sur prise." Kenneth Barneburg will be cnairman. HUBBARD CREEK NEEDLE CLUB HOLD RECENT SESSION AT CLARKE HOME The Hubbard Creek Needle Club met Wednesday, Feb. 13. at the home of Miss Martha Clarke for a potluck dinner at one o clock. The afternoon was spent sew ing, crocheting and visiting. Members present were Mes dames Pearl Grier, Jessie Gen try, Nell Haffly. Leona Briggs, Thelma Leonard, EUa Teller, Sally Amerson, Sadie McKinney, Venita Peary, Katherine Rorder, Melba Germond and children; 01 lle Peary and son; Betty Baird and son; Hazel Judd and daugh ter; Mary Judd, Ann Wandell and Florence Rippstein and daughter. The next club meeting will be Msrch 12 with a potluck dinner at the home of Mrs. Mary Judd All members are asked to be present. LADY ELKS MEET THURSDAY EVENING The Lady Elks held a meeting Thursday evening at eight o'clock in the Elks Lounge. Cards were played and those winning prizes included: bridge. high, Mrs. Robert Browning; low, Mrs. cnanes Brand, pinocnie. high, Mrs. Nan Johnson; low, Mrs. Ann Fehmerling; canasta, high, Mrs. Cecil Hays and low, Mrs. d Adams. The next meeting will be Feb. 28 and refreshments will be served. Ladies are asked to bring sand wiches. MELROSE GRANGE TO HOLD CARD PARTY The Melrose Grange will hold a card party at the Melrose Grange Hall Friday evening. Prizes will be given and lunch will be served. Mrs. Mable Busenbaik and Mrs. Amy Matthews are the committee to arrange for the party. The nubile is most eordlallt in vited to attend. .... ELGAROSE COMFORT CLUB HOLDS BOX SOCIAL SATURDAY . A box social was held Saturday evening at the Elgarose School by the Elgarose Comfort Club. Pi nochle was played with high prizes fioing to Mrs. Nelda Sand and Stan ey Sjogren and low to Mrs. Clarice Brown and David band. A door prize was won by J. N. Sand. AMARANTH SOCIAL CLUB TO HOLD POTLUCK FRIDAY The Amaranth Social Cub will hold a Friday evening potluck din ner at the Masonic Temple start ing at 1:30 o'clock. The dinner is for members and friends. BENEFIT BREAKFAST IS HELD IN DILLARD Mrs. Fred Burks, assisted by Mrs. Willard Laurance enter tained with a benefit breakfast for the- Dillard Church Woman'i Society Wednesday, at the home of Mrs. Fred Burks on Highway 42. The delicious brunch was served at eleven o'clock by the charming hostesses. The group completed plans for the coming spring fashion show and program to be presented Friday night, Feb. 29 at the Dillard School auditor ium. The decorating committee made paper flowers for the use in the beautiful wedding scene for the show. The tickets were made by the advertising chairman, Mrs. Gene Leaner, and distributed among the group to sell. Mrs. Bert Laurance, program chairman, announced all of her program scenes. DOUGLAS COUNTY COUNCIL OF PARENTS AND TEACHERS TO MEET IN YONCALLA Dr. Morris Roach of Roseburg will speak on the "Older Child" a'; the Douglas County Council of Parents and Teachers Founder's Day program at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, in the Yoncalla High School. All past presidents of the council are urged to attend. Mrs. R, Cloyd Rifle, tuition scholarship chairman, will tell about scholarships. Everyone attending is asked to bring a sack lunch. Coffee and dessert will be furnished. Preceding the regular meeting, Mrs. Ken Bushey, council presi dent, would like all board mem bers to meet at 10:45 a.m. BENEFIT CANASTA PARTY HELD IN CAMAS VALLEY RECENTLY The home of Mr. and Mrs. Orley Weist, Camas Valley, was the scene of a Valentine Day P.T.A. benefit canasta party. High scorer for the evening was Mrs. Lee Banks. Present at the party were: Mr. and Mrs. Milo Claughton, Mr. and Mrs. Art Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Thrush, Mrs. A. R. Spencer, Mrs. Lee Banks, Mrs. Hazel Defferding, Mrs. Bea Battles and Mr. and Mrs. Weist. , ELKTON WSCS HOLDS INTERESTING MEETING The WSCS of the Elkton Meth odist Church held its regular meet ing at the home of Evelyn Binder. After a potluck noon dinner the business session began. Around the table were: Mrs. Eve lyn Binder, Mrs. Edith Weatherly, Mrs. Thelma Ladd, Mrs. Frances Hedden, Mrs. Mildred Taylor, Mrs. Grace Sawyers, and Mrs. Lorna Binder a guest. . The prayer at the table wat giv en hv Mrs. Grace Sawvers. Tne business meeting was called to order by Mrs. Frances Hedden. It was voted to send a spray of funeral flowers to Mrs. Lenore Kirkride of Woodland, Calif. Mrs. Mrs. KirKriue was formerly miss Lenore Gates, daughter of Mrs. Editn liates. A gift was sent to a student of the University of Oregon. The WSCS has several more names of foreign students whom they wish to rememuer in the near future. VALENTINE PARTIES HELD IN UMPGUA Valentine parties were held Thursday afternoon In the inter mediate and primary grades of Umpqua School. In the primary room, Mrs. Wilcox had constructed a gayly trimmed post office shoe boxes disguised in red and white crepe paper with a separate box for each of her 24 children. In the intermediate and upper grades Valentines were distributed from big, bulging boxes all dressed up in traditional style. Like the pri mary room, the intermediate grades enjoyed cookies and candy during the distribution of the Val entines and mothers and small bro thera and sisters shared in 'the fun. A special feature was fur nished by Mrs. Lafe Judd who ex hibited parasols, fans, scarfs, shoes and jewel boxes sent her from Japan by her aon Garth, who is stationed there. . The upper grades had the party Friday night at the home of their principal, Mrs. Delmar Murphy, SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS IS ENTERTAINED THURSDAY Rev. Lavern Lould of the As sembly of God Church in Elkton entertained his Sunday School class in the church parlors Thurs day evening. Games were played and those at tending included : Arlene Hand, Betty Hand, Doris Hand, Dorothy Morris, Prentiss Morris and Du ane Hand. LOOK1NGGLASS GRANGE HOME ECONOMICS CLUB TO MEET ON FRIDAY The Lookingglass Grange Home Economics Club will hold a card party Friday with high and low prizes to be given for both pinochle and canasta. There will be a email admission charge. Everyone is in vited to attend. FUN AND FELLOWSHIP FAMILY NIGHT SET FOR FRIDAY AT CHURCH The Baptist Church will hold a Fun and Fellowship Family night Friday at 7:30 o'clock. A film will be shown and games and enter tainment will be furnished for the whole family. CANASTA PARTY IS ENJOYED IN YONCALLA Mr. and Mrs. Karl Hummell en tertained at a canasta party at their home in Yoncalla Thursday evening. Delicious refreshments were served at a later hour to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Rogers, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Hall and son, Ricky; Mr. and Mrs. Jean Dick erson and Mr. and Mrs. Hummell. EVERGREEN GRANGE TO HOLD POTLUCK Evergreen Grange will meet Fri day for a potluck supper at 8:30 o'clock. The business meeting will start at eight o'clock. Hand-made rugs will be on display at the hobby table. DEMONSTRATION PARTY HELD IN LOOKINGGLASS Mrs. Mary Southwicfc was a gracious hostess Friday afternoon at her home in Lookingglass for a demonstration party under the direction of Mrs. Marian Mad dox of Wilbur, given as a bene fit for the WCTU. Rev. Max Chris tian, assisting evangelist in meet ings being held currently at the local church, favored the group with several saxophone numbers. Mrs. Walter Monger gave her reading with which she won the diamond medal in a WCTU speech contest held in recent months. At the close of the meeting refresh ments were served by the hostess who was assisted by Mrs. C. N. Currier of Roseburg. In attendance were: Miss Gladys Johnston, Mrs. Jon Wilson, Mrs. George Marsh, Mrs. John Mathis, Mrs. C. N. Currier, Mrs. Walter Monger, Mrs. Jack Kerr, Mrs. George Mazon, Mrs. Arthur Marsh and the hostess, Mrs. South wick , and the demonstrator, Mrs. Marian Maddox. WINSTON CHRISTIAN CHURCH TO MEET FIRDAY The Winston Christian Church will hold a potluck dinner at the church Friday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Newton and Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Keeley will be in charge. There will be a program and coffee will be furnished. Please bring table service.
