McMinnviUe, rated No. 5 in this week's Associated Press Oregon high school basketball poll, was paced by its high-scoring forward, Don ' Porter, who registered 32 points. V- . That was two more than Wade (Swede) Halbrook, the state's lead ing scorer, made as he and his Lincoln mates beat Washington, 40 18 in a Portland prep league game. Hallbrooks' 30 points raised his season's total to 585 in 16 games for Lincoln, ranked No. 3 in the state, 1 The state's two top teams came through with victories. Central Catholic of Portland, rated No. 1, knocked off Gresham, 67-47, as its all-state star, Bob Al tenhofen, poured in 23 points. Grant Beaten Cleveland ranked No. 2, came from behind to defeat Grant, 65-59, and remain in first place in the Portland High School League. Salem was the only other team in the top 10 seeing action. The Vikings, rated No. 8, won 72-47, from Lebanon, which handed them one of their only five defeats ear- l!?r In the season. Willamette forfeited a Class A district 8 game to its townsmen, the Eugene Axemen, when seven of Its 11 first squad members turned up with the flu. The latest win gave the Farmers the nod for the district playoff at Salem Feb. 1516. Tom Findlay led the way to the easy victory with 11 poinls. With Roy Withers pouring in 17 points, his Winston Christians stormed over cellar-dwelling Meth odist Church. Winston came from behind in the second quarter and waltzed away. In a lowscoring contest, Dillard Methodist out scored South Side, 18-12, in the third game of the day. The win put Dillard in undisputed third place. Hi-Y won a fourth scheduled game by default over the Sutherlin "Y", which has dropped from the league. Pilot Center Sets Scoring Record In Tiger Game Willie Mannwsrren, the 6-foot 5 inch Pilot center from Canyonvtlle Bible- Academy hung up the best game individual basketball scoring record of the year Tuesday night. He led his squad to a 63-44 tri umph over Canyonville with a bril liant 37-polnt performance. Oddly enough, the Pilot coach was not pleased. He said, "I've never seen Mannwarren miss so many clear shots. He could have made over 60 if he'd been hitting.'' As it was, he collected 16 lield goals and five free throws. His teammates fed him well to set up the year's county prep record. His big quarters were the second and fourth vien he scored 15 and 14 respectively. Vol. Road Phone 3-4148 Roseburg Frosh Defeat Glendale The Roseburg Frosh broke the game wide open in the fourth quart er to take an easy 40-27 win from the Glendale Junior Varsity at Glendale Tuesday. Up against an immensely im proved Jayvee squad, the Frosh battled on little better than even terms through the first three quart ers. The Roseburg quint took a 9-3 lead by the end of the initial quart er, but with five Frosh subs in the game in the second quarter, the hosts cut the halftime score to 13-12. It was still tight in the third canto at 22-18, but the Frosh quit toying apd rang up twice as many points as the Glendale five could muster in the final round. Coach Hal Zurcher praised his Frosh for a return to the fire and spirit they have lacked in recent weeks. The win gives the Frosh a record ot 8-5. Linfield Frosh Edge Braves The Reedsport Braves lost their fourth game in 19 Tuesday night by a skinny one-point margin, 56 55, to the Linfield College Fresh men. Larry Rose had I chance to make a new game out of it in the last three seconds. His foul shot bounced harmlessly off the rim. It was that foul shot that spelled the only difference in team scor ing. Each team had 20 field goals, but the Linfield quintet had 16 of 29 shots to ReedsDort's 15 of 23. The Brkves appeared on their wsy in the first half as they whip ped to a 21-13 first-quarter lead and extended it to 31-17 midway in the second. But Linfield put on its own drive to tie the halftime score at 37 . 37. By the third breather, the visitors were on top, 49-44. , Duane Leggett made 15 ' points to lead his Braves, but Linfield's Datlen took game honors with 16.
