The woman, Joan Swift, was left $10,000 under the will of Fred H. Swift, Independence, Ore., lum berman, who died last 'August. Tht) two had been married, then were divorced.. Mrs. Swift testified in court Thursday they lived together as man and wife after the divorce. That, ahe claimed, made her his common law wife, and gave her a dower right of 25 per cent of the estate. , , . Swift had another ex-wife, Mlml Swift of New York. She received 75 per cent of the estate under the will. His secretary, Pearl Wal dorf of Independence, Ore , waa willed 25 per cent of Swift's estate after small bequests. Law-1 ton Collins, Army Chief of Staff, said Friday th Koiean campaign has proved "that wo need a sound program of manpower mobilization." This would be supplied by Uni versal Military Training, the gen eral told the House Armed Serv ices Committee. He supported a Pentaeon plan for beginning limited UMT with 60,000 volunteers between 17 and 19 years old. They would receive six months training and would go immediately Into active service for 18 months as reservists. Secretary of Defense Lovett told the committee Thursday that mili tary authorities could start this program by October or November, if Congress approved necessary legislation by April. Collins said if UMT had been in effect before Korea, "we would not have had to disrupt the lives of .thousands of men who served in World War II and who had since taken on greater responsi bilities both at homo and in their civilian pursuits." Nationalist China Will Sign Treaty With Japan TAIPEH, Formosa tf Nation alist China said Friday it is ready to start negotiating a peace treaty with Japan. The announcement came more than SO hours after the government was officially informed Japan want ed to sign a peace. Sweden, Russia Make New Trade Agreement STOCKHOLM, Sweden Wt -Swe-den and Russia plan to double their trade largely Russian wheat for Swedish machinery and metal goods under a new trade agree ment announced Thursday night by the Swedish Foreign Office.
