He is being brought here under spon sorship of the Community Concert Association. From "Porgy" to "Pagliaccl" is Duncan's rise to fame. In 193S George Gershwin heard an un known young Negro baritone sing. He chose him to create the roll of Porgy in his folk-opera "Porgy and Bess," and he said of him: "Todd Duncan is one of the finest artists ever developed in his race." In 1945 Duncan's musical career was highlighted by three import ant achievements: Music Director Artur Rodzinski of the New York Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra chose him as soloist for the dra matic cantata, "The Prairie"; Co lumbia Concerts sent him as a trail-blazer on a Latin-American tour, and he returned after a suc cessful tour in time to appear as soloist at Now York's Stadium Concerts. A month later he ap peared with the New York City Opera Company to sing 12 per formances of two important opera roles, Tonio in "Pasliacci" and the Toreador Escamillo in "Car- lsssSIMBslBssssslHHiBBrXriBBianVSCSQ ' " ' .... , . .
