I 27 Charged With "Bookie" Racket VANCOUVER, B. C. (CP) Twenty-seven persons, alleged kingpins in a $6,000,000 bookmak ing racket here, Were committed for trial in higher court. They were indicted on a charge of conspiracy in the operation of betting houses throughout the city working in central groups with headquarters in downtown office Duildings. The accused include 26 men and one woman. The crown contends she is a publisher of the horse racing sheet, supplying bookies track news. . The preliminary hearing ended after 14 days of evidence, mainly supplied by police investigators. "I commit you all lor trials In higher court," said magistrate W. W. B. Mclnnes at a brief court appearance. He made no other comment. All were released on bail, to talling approximately $70,000, and will appear for trial at the next assizes, about mid-February. Will Move Today Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wyatt and children are moving today from Harrison street to their ' newly completed home on Tangerway street in Woodleigh addition. Mm. Wilder Better Mrs. A. A. Wilder is reported improving at Mercy hospital, where she is recieving medical treatment. She expects to be able to return to her home in time for Christmas. Heme From Collage Dick Hempenius, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andy Hempenius of Roseburg, is home from Oregon State college for the Christmas holidays. Dick will visit with parents and friends. HOME From Hotoltal Mrs. J. E. Sawyers has been dis charged from Douglas Community hospital and Is now convalescing at her home on N. Stephens street. Mrs. bayers received medical treatment at the hospital for a severe cold. Her Prom Walla Walla Joan Selfe, Roseburg, arrived here a few days ago from Walla Walla, Wash., where she is attending college. From here she proceeded to Burbank, Calif., and was ac companied by her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Earl C. Purdy of Roseburg. While in Bur bank they plan to spend the holi days with Mr. and Mrs. William Selfe Sr. PREVUE OF A COMING AT TRACTION. . . Roddy McDowell and Ruth Hus sey are set for tomorrow's "Family Theater" broadcast. Roddy will star, and Ruth as sumes the hostess chores. This week's dramatization is a charm ing fantasy by Charles Tazewell, titled "A Lullaby for Christmas." The story concerns mute shep herd boy, ridiculed by his elders, who follows a star to find a man, a woman and a new-born baby. His life-long prayer to talk is an swered, and he sings a lullaby to the child. A charming story for the Christmas season, Saturday, 7:00 p.m. Another reminder of one of the "musts" for the past 17 years is Lionel Barrymore,' who portrays Dickens' "Scrooge." The 105-year-old Dickens story has become a olassic Christmas tale, particu arly for Americans. Mr. Barry more's annual interpretatlona ot the "Scrooge" part have become radio classics also. This, also, will be heard on Sunday, Dec. 23, from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. Don't miss it. The :45'ers from the first Christian church will be on the air Saturday morning with their Christmas program, consisting of music by the Junior choir, and the narration from memory of the Christmas story by Merrillee Cur rier. Mack, with his wife, Shirley, and two children, has been at Sweet Home in a similar position since leaving Roseburg. Another former News Review employe.
