Of historical in terest is tne legend concerning tne pioneer wagon trains which took shelter in the large circular area enclosed by the sheer rocky cliffs of Fort Rock and where the travel ers successfuly defended them selves from an Indian attack. The formation is said to stand out in a comparatively level desert area. Rain soaked roofs were a major factor in preventing the spread of the flames to ad joining buildings.
