HON NOW -OFF TO S I LUCKY AH IS- jLPwwcwfsr Candidate Being Sought By Republican Governors r:v JACK BELL GALTINDURG, 'form. (AP) Republican differ ences over a presidential candidate for 1952 were reflected Monday at the 43rd. annual governors' conference here. An Associated Press poll among: the 25 GOP governors showed nine voting for Kisenhower, four supporting Sen. Robert A. Taft of Ohio and the rest not expresing an opinion. mere was indecision among GOP governors both on whether Eisenhower would be available r would be satisfactory as a nominee. Talk among both Republicans and Democrats about the White House race next year was heard as the governors' conference was poised to tackle national defense problems. Democrats outside the south stuck to President Truman as both parties' members talked politics at high speed while awaiting a roundtable discussion with George C. Marshall, former secretary of defense; Charles E.' Wilson, the defense mobilizer, and Millard F. Caldwell, civilian defence adminis trator. Sentiments Expressed The pro-Elsenhower sentiments expressed by some governors were offset somewhat by these develop ments: (1. Gov; Earl Warren of Califor nia indicated if he didn't actu ally say so that he will be a favorite son candidate for the GOP nomination. This may deny the Eisenhower supporters a cov eted California linkup with the New York and Pennsylvania strength they are depending on at next vear's nominating convention. I 2. Gov. Val Peterson of Ne braska, who favors Eisenhower, served notice that the general must . speak out by Jan. 1 on his in tentions. Otherwise, Peterson said, the nomination is likely to go by default to Senator Taft 3. Another republican governor, also an Eisenhower supporter, told a reporter he doesn'r believe the general will have anything to say about politics ior inonuis to come that he will accede only to a genuine draft movement. The theme of four of the Re publican governors who spoke out at news conferences yesterday was that Eisenhower has a better chance of winning in 1952 than Taft. They were Govs. Peterson, Edward F. Am of Kansas, Sher man Adams of New Hampshire and Walter J. Kohjer Jr. of Wis consin. Gov. Thomas E. GOP .Need Votes Warren put the problem of tho Republicans into succinct words. Asked what the GOP needs to win in 1952, he replied: "More votes." Some of the party members ap parently didn't agree with their colleagues that Eisenhower would be the best candidate. They said the general's views on major issues are unknown. Gov. J. Bracken Lee of Utah sounded the Taft theme with an assertion that the Ohio senator is 1 a man we can trust," He said he doesn't know if Eisenhower is a Democrat or a Republican.,.. Two Democratic governors who didn't want to be quoted by name anwered poll queries by saying they want Eisenhower as their party's nominee. That seemed a lost cause to most of the Democrats willing to ex press an opinion, with 11 of them voting for President Truman as their choice for the 1952 party standard bearer. The south gave little support to Mr. Truman, with only Govs Sid McMath of Arkansas, Kerr Scott of North Carolina and a third south erner who didn't want to be named publicly, casting their lot with the President. Rioting involving an estimated 3.000 persons broke out and was brought under control only after the national guard was called out. The riots wrecked the apartment minding involved so badly it is still unoccupied, McGrath was told. The Cook county grand iurv In dicted the chief of police for not controlling the mob, and t h e owner of the apartment house, the attorney who represented t h e Negro tenant, and others on charges of conspiracy to cause riot. The FBI also investigated, and McGrath told a delegation that on the basis of its findings, he will bring the case before a federal grand jury in Chicago.
