(AP) Jimmy Sloan, a thin-faced youth of 13, was Retting a big kick out of hiding his "chaxvin l-.baccy" from his nurse. He couldn't understand why she couldn't understapd he"d been chew ing since he whs six. Yes, the lad was in good spirits, even though the broken leg he had sulfered with for three and a half weeks was still giving him trouble the leg he had hobbled and hitch hiked on for 15 miles to reach a doctor when he couldn't stand the pain any longer. Jimmy limped into the county seat of Wayne earlier this week on a pair of crutches crudely molded from some bean poles and a sawed oft broom handle. He hurt the leg. he said, when he fell off a horse on his uncle's farm. And it kept hurting so much he figured he had to get to a doc tor. The youngster hasn't gone t o school more than 10 days in his life, he said. And he ran t read or write He said his Dad was in prison for stealing some copper wire i rum a coal mine, ana nis Ma "She drinks." So he's been ttay in( with relatives. His story went on: lie half-walked, half-dragged the seven miles from the backwoods farm to a paved road, where a mo torist picked him up and took him to within one mile of Wayne. He liune it the rest ol the way into ,. . ,:. k; Shoes. He found a doctor. And Mr. Charles W. Ferguson, wife of the circuit judge, heard of him and made arrangements for his admis sion in an orthopedic hospital here. Doctors quickly confirmed the fracture and put the leg in traction. They will undertake surgery lalec to correct the incorrect bone knit ting. The relatives with whom he stayed had no telephone on their hillside farm and could not be reached for comment. But Mrs Ferguson, a native of the area, and hospital authorities gave full credence to his story. They said they had reason to believe him. Jimmy was happy about the whole thing even about the fight over the "chaw in tobaccy." SALES--SERVICE-PARTS TITAN JUNIOR ONI-MAN See US Before You Buy! Why haven't we had the shortages in civilian goods that so many forecasters were warning of a few months ago? A complete answer would be a complex one, tor a lot of factors are involved. B-'t the main reason is that we now are able to pro duce a great deal more than at the start of World War II more than the average person realised and perhaps more than some of the forecasters realized. Production rapacity has in creased so much that despite the defense protram we have sur- plusef in a'number of lines, price cutting in a few, and scattered layoffs of industrial workers. And while we probably are little more than halfway to the peak of the defense program, a good part of what's to come will be taken care of by still more expansion of production capacity. So even a the peak, it looks now as if there would be more butter along with guns, and more television sets along with tanks, than had been expected. There still may be some shortages, but not as many or as severe as had been forecast. The scope of the production ex pansion is emphasized when you compare outputs and capacities of WHY BE SICK?
