Grocery Trade, Labor Groups Urge Return To Rationing To Halt Hoarding, Profiteering (Br The AsMCUIcd Pmil Retail prices of many foods continued to climb this week, spurred by consumer war-scare buying and by sharply increased demand from stores, wholesalers and processors trying to buildup supply backlogs. Reports of "buying runs" on such items as coffee, sugar, short ening, olive oil and canned meats were widespread. Many stores said their sales in the past several days were the highest for some time. This upsurge in buying gained momentum despite repeated warn ings by food industry spokesmen and members of Congress that it could lead only to artificially high prices, then rationing. . Several leaders of grocery trade and labor groups telegraphed to Washington for a return to rationing immediately, contend ing that further delay encouraged hoarding and profiteering. And President Truman told the nation that "if a sharp rise in prices should make it necessary, I shall not hesitate to recommend" price controls and rationing. Park Items Top Meet Hikes Retail pork items again led the meat price advances this week. Center cut chops, for example, jumped an much- as 10 cents a pound in the competitive chain stores of some cities, and were Silling at the same price as sir loin steak ($1.09 a pound) in Bos ton. ' Most beef cuts held about u n changed, although scattered i n creases ranging to eight cents a pound were reported. Stockyard re ceipts of cattle have been heavy recently. A few marketing areas posted two to 10-cent a pound increases on lamb and lighter weight chick ens, but mostly those items held unchanged. Top grade eggs were up one to four cents a dozen. Coffee prices rose to record highs as leading chain stores ad vanced their bag-packed brands two to five cents a pound at retail and several leading roasters hiked wholesale prices of vacuum-packed coffees another two cents a pound. Retail sugar prices edged a penny or two a pound higher, re flecting recent wholesale advances and heavy demand. Raw sugar prices climbed to a new high for the year early (his week. In New York, Herman B. Glaser, counsel for the SOO-member Retail Food Merchants association, wired Pre sident Truman urging that the sugar market be "flooded and glut ted to break profiteering." Lettuce and tomatoes were about the only produce items which strengthened pricewise in most stores this week. Wool, livestock, hides, salt, bor ax, tea and musk are exported from Tibet.
