6 Tht Newi-Rtview, Roseburg, Ort. Fri., July 21," 1950 Cincinnati Reds Defeat Brooks In Doubleheader . By JACK HAND Aaaoctatad Prcas Sportawrlter The sizzling Cincinnati Reds pol ished off the ambitious Brooks last night in both ends of a twilight nisht doubleheader, 3-1 and 6-2. That made it eight out of 11 over the Dodgers this season and i wins in their last 25 starts. Or, if you prefer, 21 of 29. Kenny Raffcnsberger's cunning control stuff silenced the Brooks in the opener despite Don New combe's five-hitter. Then Ewell Blackwell struck out nine in a siz zling night performance. Neither Cincy pitcher walked a man. Ted Kluszewski was the big man of the first game. His first-inning single drove in one of two Cincy runs and his 17th homer in the sixth added the last. The Dodgers are now three full games back of St. Louis and Cincy is only a half-game back of the sixth place New York Giants. While Cincinnati lowered the boom on Brooklyn, the New York Giants bounced back to smother St. Louis, 13-3.. The loss didn't cost the Cardinals' the lead but nar rowed their advantage over Boston and Philadelphia to a single game. The rained-out Braves didn't have a chance to gain and the Phillies missed their opportunity, bowing to Pittsburgh, 10 8, in slugfest that lasted almost three hours. Ted Beard, Gus Bell and Danny O'Connell each had three hits in the 16-hit attack. Despite homers by Dick Sisler, Granny Hamncr and Del Knnis, Pittsburgh struggled home to win for reliefer Murry Dickson. Ralph Kiner'! 27lh homer off Russ Meyer in the eighth helped nail it down. Leo Durocher's Giants really got revenge for the 18-4 and 10-3 boat ings of yednesday as they piled it up against the Cardinals with an eight-run third inning. Dave Kos lo, a non-winner since June 20, enp ped his ninth with a nine-hitter. Five double plays and 16 Giant hits, Including three by Don Muel ler, made it easy. Everybody closed in on the De troit Tigers yesterday when they lost to Buaton, 6-5, in 11 innings. The runnerup New York Yankees, not scheduled to play, gained a i half game. Cleveland and Boston each picked up a lull game. Dom DiMaggio's double off Art Houtteman scored Billy Coodman with the winning Red Sox run to cap an uphill struggle. Detroit dm all its scoring off Walt Masteraon before he was knocked out in the fourth inning. After that Chuck Stobbs and Ellis Kinder pitched ex cellent relief ball. Pat Mullin bash ed an inside-the-park homer for Detroit with a man on in the third and Walt Dropo hit his 24th for the Red Sox in the fourth. The Sox pulled within one of a tie on Bob by Doerr's 13th homer in the eighth and evened matters in the ninth or two walks and Vern Stephen's single. Sam Zoldak and Bob Kennedy teamed up on Philadelphia for Cleveland's 3-2 victory in 11 inn ings. As a result the Tribe is only 414 games back of Detroit. Kennedy tied the score with a homer off Alex Kellner after two were out in the ninth. Zoldak, who replaced Steve Gromek in the sev enth, shut out the A's with two hits the rest of the way and drove in Kennedy with a "bloop" single to left in the 11th. Kennedy scored all three runs. Roseburg has been mentioned as a possible member of the Far West league. Because of a professed lack of attendance at games in the Far West Baseball league, Hale Scar brough and Red Kurd of the Klam ath Falls Herald and News and Bill Wentworth of KFJI have of fered a possible solution. They say. "Take into the league more baseball minded cities, such as Grants Pass, Roseburg and Eu reka in place of Willows, Pittsburg and Marysvule." They continue by saying, "The travel distance would be cut over half along with expenses. Gates would be 10O Dercent better and more people who like baseball would get the chance to see more and better baseball." Thcv sav there is a definite chance that the Far West league will fold unless new arrangements are made. OMBIft WINS TOURNIY COUNCIL BLUFFS, la., July I .
