Reno Silver Sox Win Far West Redding Series By The Associated Press The Reno Silver Sox finally tied the can to the high-riding and Far West league - leading Redding Browns. Spokane's Al Mengert Wins NW Golf Title VANCOUVER, B. C, July 3-Pt The hottest thing in Northwest golf that's Spokane's Al Mengert. The 19-year-old two-time nation al junior champion buried the Seat tle veteran, Harry Givan, beneath a brilliant assortment of approach shots and putts Saturday, winning 5 and 4 to capture the Pacific Northwest Golf association crown. When the match closed out on the 32nd grecn Mengert was 12 under par. His first 18-hole round, which left Givan seven down was nine under par. Only the dav be fore. Mengert had gone 10 under par to set a new Capilano course record. Meanwhile, in the women's D'ay, Gracie DeMoss of Corvallis. These are but a few of the base bairheadlines today following one of the most action-packed Sundays on the diamond in many seasons. The second game i ended in a 10-inning 8-8 tie, halted 1 by Pennsylvania's curfew law. The Red Birds edged out the Pittsburgh Pirates, 2-1. Boston's Braves climbed into third place, two games off the pace, sweeping a doubleheader from the New York Giants, 11-5 and 6 3. Ex-Giants ruined the New Yorkers. Walker Cooper, Sid Gor don and Buddy Keer homered for the Braves, Long John Sain allowed only six hits in the first game to become the first hurler in the majors to notch 11 triumphs this season. He won 10 ail last season. Cooper, his battery-mate, suffered a sprained ankle and was sent to medical center where x-rays showed no fracture. He will be out of action for several days. It took a fine relief performance by Hal Newhouser to enable the Tigers to salvage one of the four- game series from the red hot In dians. Newhouser stopped a Cleve land uprising in the eighth inn ing and Detroit rallied for three runs in the ninth to win the open er, 8-5. Luke Easter's homer with two on climaxed a five-run sixth inning to give the Tribe a 5-3 vic tory in the second game. Feller Gttt Help Feller, who received credit for the second game victory, needed help from Al Benton after the Ti gers had put the tying runs on base in the ninth. The 31-year-old Feller, is the 42nd pitcher to win 200 or more games. The last to enter the select circle was Bobo Newsom in 194S. Home runs by .Joe DiMaggio, ed the difference in the Yankee Yogi Berra and Johnny Mize prov Red Sox slugfest. Berra got two others hits to drive in five runs. Allie Reynolds got credit for his seventh victory which pushed the Yanks back in second place, three and a hald games behind the Ti gers. The Indians trail by four and the Red Sox by six. Rookie Bob Hooper won his eigh th game as the Athletics won from Washington, 7-4. The A's pounced on Bob Kuzava for five runs in the third inning. Ray Scarborough and Gus Zernial teamed up to give the White Sox a 5-2 triumph over the Browns in the first game. The Browns won the second game, 4-3, when Bob Cain walked pinch hit ter Roy Sievers with the bases loaded in the 11th inning to force in the winning run. Purdue Golfer Wins NCAA Championship ALBUQUERQUE, N. M July 3 -f.Pi Matter-of-fact Fred Wamp ler of Purdue has annexed the Na tional Collegiate Athletic associa tion gol' crown to an already-impressive list of links titles. Wampler took the collegiate golf classic championship Saturday by defeating husky Bob McCall, 195D Colgate football captain, 2 and 1. A little behind schedule maybe, the Seattle Rainers have arrived last in the Pacific Coast league's first division. This is the same club, remember, that couldn't buy a victory earlier in the season. The Rainiers hit the comeback II exactly two months ago, fizzed trail exactly two months ago, fizzed along at a .600 clip, wont nine se ries In a row, and now repose in fourth place a game and a half behind San Diego. That's pretty decent baseball, as the Padres can attest. Seattle climaxed a tremendous week yesterday by sweeping both j ends of the doubleheader with San I Diego, 2 to 0 and 4 to 3. That gave the Suds the series, six games to . one their most lopsided triumph of the campaign. Big Jim Wilson won his 12th straight and pitched his second shutout of the week in the opener. The afterpiece was scheduled for seven innings. It went nine. Tod Davis broke it up wilh a home run that landed on the hill behind left field at Sick's stadium. Wilson spaced five hits and fanned four, thereby running his strikeout total to 115. 1 And the Suds are still foaming. They entertain Portland tomorrow , in a Fourth of July twin bill and, barring slip-ups, should be well on their way to their 10th successive series. San Francisco also swept a Sun day doubleheader. Manny Perez shut out Los Angeles, 2 to 0 in the second game; the Seals fashioned two fat innings to wnip tne Ange les, 10 to 9, in the opener. Perez yielded only two hits in the seven inning contest. Hollywood and Oakland, the No. 1 and 2 clubs, divided theirs. The Oaks took the opener, 5 to -3, by putting down a Hollywood uprising that loaded the bases in the ninth. The Twinks took the nightcap, 9 to 3, turning in a four run second innings. The final game between Sacra mento and Portland also went into overtime. Relief pitcher Harry Gumbert singled home the winning run to give the last place Solons a 6 to 5 triumph. Yankee Clipper To Try First Baseman's Job BOSTON. July 3 P After setting center field standards for future generations of fly-chasers to shoot at, Joe DiMaggio, the famed New York Yankee Clipper, todav was prepared to switch to first base to bolster his drooping world championship teammates. "This is strictly my idea" Man ager Casey Stengel explained. "I've asked Joe to try first base to help the team. That position has been a sore sport for us all season. I ex pect to switch him in our next game in Washington." A shrug was the 35-year-old 1M Maggio's immediate answer when asked how he thought he would do in the late Lou Gehrig's position.
