3 Few Corporations Credited With Profits' Upswing WASHINGTON, The federal reserve board report! a few large companies accounted for the upswing in corporate profits in early 1950 because they alone were able to cut costs. In the June issue of its monthly "Bulletin," the board said smaller concerns missed sharing in the ov erall orofits Bain for 'he reason they have been "somewhat less suc cessful in their attempts to reduce costs in the face of growing com petition. "Larger companies have realized substantial operating economies from extensive postwar additions and improvements to plant and equipment," it continued. "Hence, while corporate profits for first quarter 1950 were larger in the aggregate than those of fourth quarter 1949, the increase re flect Ih improve earning or a few Urge companies rather than a general rise in the earnings of all size classes ot concerns." The report was issued in the wake of a decision by the House ways and means committee to propose a bill boosting income taxes on con cerns with profits above $167,000 a year, reducing the rate on those with lesser net earnings.
