Martini There'! nothing like a copy of the town'i newspaper, and a few minutes atop the town'i favorite vantage point to make you feel ac quainted when your atay is brief and church attendance, of course, if you are there on a Sunday as we planned to be in Victoria, B.C. Fortunately for me, the first is sue of The Dally Colonist, which I read, contained Tom Taylor's comments on Victoria as icon from atop the Hudson's Bay ob servation tower. In Thinking Aloud Mr. Taylor remarked that "I had n't seen the city as a seagull does since I crept tortuously to the Parliament buildings 'cupola' a year or more ago ..." I overcame E, J.'s reluctance to climb stairs, when the escalator gave out, by telling him he should be thankful I wasn't dragging him to the top of the Parliament build ing! Clipping in hand, I "saw" Victoria delightfully. (So did E. J. once he was up there, hanging on to his hat in the stiff breeze.) "You should go atop Hudson's udf ouilding if you want to see Victoria (Greater Victoria) at its best serene and lovely, a jewel set in a saucer rimmed by sea and tree-clad hills ... I hadn't thought a city could look so neat. There wasn't a thing out of place. Houses, buildings, thoroughfares green spaces it was as though a giant crane had laid them down meticulously in position. "Victoria is a comely house wife." (Yes, indeed, Mr. Taylor!) . , , "The streets had the appear ance of being newly swept, such of them as could be traced. Homes snuggled everywhere, so close to foliage that most thoroughfares were invisible, which is a good way to have them." (Yes, again, Mr. Taylor, I love tree-shaded streets, too!). "South, a strip of sea and the everlasting Olympic range; west. the Sooke Hills running into the Halahat; north, tree-lops linking Little Saanich Douglas and Tolmie mountains (save the word in the presence of the Olympics); east, Notice of Annual Meeting The annual moating of the stockheldars of the Umpqua Savings and Loon Association will bo hald at 147 North Jackson Straar, Rotaburg, Oregon, on Wednsiday, June 21, 1 930, at 7:30 o'clock P. M. for tha alactlan of directors and auditors ond for the transaction of such gen eral buiinoss as may properly como bafora the moating. i ' . UMPQUA SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION ly H, 0.
