Spon sored by the Texas Co., the process is designed to greatly improve fuel mileage by cutting down ignition delay. Its proponents asserted the process would increase motoring mileage per gallon by about 30 percent, and utilize just about any kind of fuel. More efficiency and safety has been built into today's car than in any previous models. But the car makers are looking ahead not only to still greater use of motor transport, but to the day when competition really returns to the auto industry. When that time comes the company that can claim the greatest engineering ad vances and the most comfortable ride will get most of the new car customers. It is no secret, of course, that a major part of the huge investment in engineering research is going into further development ot auto mobile engines, automatic trans missions and the mileage possibili ties of motor fuels. Part of Task All these efforts have been part of the engineers' task for years. The efforts have been intensified since the war as the cost of the automobile and operating costs have moved steadily forward. The automatic transmissions are doing a good job, but every engineer having anything to do with them knows they can be bet tered. And as for fuel, more than two thirds of the mileage possibilities of a gallon of gasoline still goes out the exhaust pipe. Petroleum ex perts describe their work in seek ing great fuel economy as an effort not only to get more miles per gallon, but "more gallons to the barrel of crude oil." As far as the automatic trans mission is concerned there is a growing impression that the ideal device is going to be a combina tion of the actual automatic gear shifter as exemplified in the Hy dra-Malic transmission and the torque converter principle common to all the new types , introduced since the war.
